On my way to work you mite change gears in a 6 speed about 7 times this auto changes about 50. My fuel miliage is very bad to. In alot of ways I wish I had my 6 speed back.
The reason the dealer wouldn't do it is the shift points can't be changed in the ECU. The ECU only controls the TV pressure, no shift point or any other control.

The problem with the gear hunt is in the VB. The only one I have heard of so far that has consistently solved the problem is Dave Goerend. Give him a call and see what he has going.

If you want to change the way the trans shifts and holds gears then you have to modify more than the VB.

If it did it would be lugging (less mpg)!JMO. speed up then slow down, if it bothers you.

If you went in and just asked them to change shift points and not what your problem was then I can see them telling you what they did. IIRC I read some place that someone else had this problem and I thought he said there was a TSB about it. Anyway he had either his PCM or EMC reflashed and it took care of the problem with his trans hunting for gears all of the time so it might be worth the time to check through the TBS's.

I have no problem at all with my tranny hunting for a gear. NONE!!!! It locks up at 45 MPH unless I have been or am pulling my horse trailer and it will lock up at 50mph on que. One thing has been done on the tranny since new. The previous owner complained of it hunting so they replaced the Governor. Can't remember if it was the pressure switch or the governor itself. Problem solved..... No more issues with that complaint. You just need to find you a good transmission guy that works at a dealership. Guess I am lucky the tech really knows his automatic transmissions. Said I would have no problems at all as long as I keep the fluid flushed every 30,000 miles and filter changed every 60,000 miles. He said in my area there are several 48re's with over 150,000 miles on them. Matter of fact that is mainly what they sell around here. Automatics Can't hardly find a manual that is why I have an automatic. I don't care for the TC but the thing is it will live for a long time just stock. I looked into a VB and TC. I am still on the fence on that one. Everytime you modify something it will stress another part of the transmission. TC and VB then you will need an upgraded flexplate. Then you will need a billet input shaft/drum and so on. Sometimes it dosen't make any since to even touch it, if it wasn't for that darn TC I wouldn't even consider it at all.

As per several rebuilders you should change both the filter and fluid every 30K as listed under Sched B. The filter for your trans is not all that costly to not change it every 30K. As for as flushing or band adjustment I'll stay out of that can of worms.

i put a manual lock up switch on my 01 2500 QUAD CAB. CURED ALL PROBLEMS WITH HUNTING BETWEEN O/D AND 3RD, OR IN OR OUT OF LOCK UP. THEY MAKE A TCC FOR THESE BUT THEY COST OVER 4 HUNDRED. MINE COST 5 BUCKS WORTH OF MATIERIAL, AND ABOUT IN HOUR INSTALLATION

Who knows, maybe we will have to check out the new 6 speeds.
Thinking like this is why we have so many tranny issues! Softer shifts means more slop and more slipping and leaves you with faster wear and less transfer of power. We have to many people driving these trucks wanting them to ride and drive like a mini van!!!
