Tranny service.... results!

Well I finally serviced my 48re today for the first time in 47,000 miles. I now wish I would have done it sooner because WOW what a difference! I drained the pan and removed it, changed the filter, wiped out the pan and cleaned off the magnet. The old fluid surprisingly looked very good. Followed instructions found on here for adjusting the bands. Reinstalled the pan and added 4.5 qts Mopar ATF+4 as a starting point. Drained transfer case and refilled with about 2.5 quarts till it came out the fill hole. Started truck and put in neutral and let run for a few minutes then added fluid 1/2 qt at a time and waited, cycled through gears, and rechecked. Repeated process until I had added 7qts and fluid level was exactly at full mark. Took the truck out for a spin and could not believe how much better it was than before. It shifts nice and smooth but MUCH firmer than before and even seems as though the TC is working slightly more effectively. I did a few miles of normal driving, stop and go, hills, hard acceleration to kick down a gear, and a couple wide open runs from a stop and I can definately feel a huge difference. It honestly shifts like new - as good as you can expect out of a stock tranny. I know the autos in these trucks are considered weak links in stock form but I must say I think I got a good one (knock on wood). I'm at 47,000 with this being the first service, 35" tires with 3.73 gears since 3,000 miles and the Edge usually on level 2 or 3 since 9,000 miles and plenty of towing involved, some fairly heavy. I know I have been playing with fire but hopefully it hangs in there for another several thousand as i don't forecast the funds for a built tranny showing up anytime soon. Sorry for the length but thought I should share my positive experience with everyone. Besides, without this site I would never have considered tackling this on my own before. I now cringe at the thought of paying someone to do any type of routine maintenance on my truck. I would like to thank this site and its members for the information, knowledge, experiences, and motivation that have taught me so much and given me the confidence that I needed. If anyone else is intimidated by doing this, go for it! It is so much easier than I had expected.

Well, I am glad you did all of that and you prase this site also.

To real point is, you just praised yourself too. We are a great group of owners that individually help each other with 1000s of small or big bits of information that helps us owning and mantaining a vehicle.

To this I thank YOU and ALL others on this site.

Remember YOU are part of this too after you post your experience.

A perfect example would be the transfer case. I read a tip by someone on here to loosen the fill plug first to make sure you get it off before taking the drain plug out. Good tip cuz that fill plug was TIGHT! and the drain plug came out fairly easy. Simple stuff like that makes the job go SO much easier.

There are instructions in this thread as well as part numbers for the gov pressure solenoid. May want to swap in a new one while your in there if you are having gear hunt problems. The solenoid and transducer are like 100 bucks for both. Available here www.transmissionpartsusa.com

I just used Mopar ATF+4 from Wally World. Like $4.67 a qt. good luck!

Do you think i should change out the gov if i am not having 1-2 problems? My main problem is the 2-3-2 hunt. I mean if have the cash to get it i will but i am not sure how my funds will be once i get everything i need.

I was planning on doing it then at the last minute said screw it and just did the fluid/filter and adjusted the bands. As stated above, happy with the results so far.
