A number of years back G.M. wanted automatics serviced at least by the book and if not would not repair under service contract or standard warranty. When servicing at least as per the book the amount of transmission failures dropped noticeably. The manufactures are very aware these fliud exchange machines are used and used a lot.I never had a factory rep ever have a negative to say about their use.A number of aftermarket service contract companys/adjusters actually inguired if and when a fliud exchange had been performed. But your original question is I don't know why.Bet its been hashed over a lot over the years.

Tranny pooched round II!!!

Sorry to revive an old post but have an update.....sigh......grrr.......@##@@!#!@#

Anyway.......

Well, my tranny pooched in May of this year and got it rebuilt by a supposed “reputable” tranny guy. At the time he indicated that a “seal somehow got cut” and that did in the unit (fried clutches, etc). Anyway, he rebuilt it, and it seemed OK. He indicated that there was a BD Valve Body in it, but I wonder if he actually redid the VB.

The reason I think maybe he did not do any work on the VB is because just recently the tranny pooched again!!!

Here are my symptoms that led up to the failure. First off, I noticed that when going from Drive to Neutral, the tranny was still giving a bit of forward pull and the RPM’s did not kick up a couple hundred like they usually do.

The second issue I found was that when going in Reverse, it seemed to be actually going in Reverse and Forward at the same time. I had to give her good power to get it to back up and as soon as I let off power the truck stopped dead (like the brakes were on) and seemed to want to go forward again.

Shortly after these symptoms, I had nothing in any gear going forward, but OK pull in reverse.

I searched a bunch of forums and one guy seemed to have the same problem and thought it was the VB not shifting properly.

Unfortunately, the rat so-and-so that rebuilt the tranny is no longer in business, so warranty is out of the question.

Oh yeah, and the final original failure was similar in that all forward gears had no grab and reverse seemed kind of OK.

Anyway, looking to buy a DTT (sounds like they have a pretty good rep) tranny as a replacement, but was wondering what your thoughts were as far as a faulty VB causing the second failure?

Also, my gal is concerned about future warranty and really wants a Dodge Dealer to do the repair/replacement. Does anyone know if you can actually buy a “built” tranny from Dodge that can handle extra power above stock (have a few “goodies” installed on my truck)?

BTW, I never “flog” my truck; it is pretty much used for road trips unloaded and vacation trips in the summer with a 2000 lb camper and 3000 lb trailer and boat.

Don't do the dealer rebuild cause it will be just as bad. You can get a complete Goerend or HTS but they are pricey. Goerend does have a excellent warranty (can't remember what it is) where the dealer will only give you a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. Take a look on his site and give him a call first thing in the morning. No you can't buy a built tranny from Dodge, you just get the same old weak TC, etc.

Thanks Spooler, that is what I figured...Definately want to buy a built tranny....just need to convince the wife! I would love to purchase a good tranny from one of the US folks, but DTT is here in Canada (where I am) and that makes it WAY easier for me to get it to me (bullshyte duties and ben dover border borkerage fees)......

Yeap, I see that in your signature. DTT works fine also, I don't know about the warranty though.

I'd forget about the dealer or warranty.

Buy the DTT and don't look back. Excellent transmissions. You can buy direct from DTT or have a DTT certified builder build yours.

Dealer DOES carry a Heavy Duty 48re.Its in the parts books. Its a factory reman unit and if I'm not mistaken carries a 3/36 factory warranty. The price and description of the internals has been posted here on this site before.Try looking it up on Dodge parts .com or such.
