Angry Tranny in park and no start?

Ive got question for you all. I bought an 06 mega cab with the factory 4 spd/w OD and sometimes when i get in to start i turn the key over and nothing happens, no dash lights or anything. I can then move the auto shift up a bit (not that is actually moves , just push up on it) and then hit the key and she fires right up. I have also put it in reverse once and it was like it was in nuetral, hit the gas and rpms just go up but didnt move. Put it back in drive then back in reverse and it was all good again. Not sure how these newer trucks work and my 02 is a 6 spd. My question is, is there a sensor that tell the tranny what gear you are in and if so where is it. At 78xxx is that covered under any kind of warranty? Any help would be great. Thanks

Did you happen to notice if the square indicator was on around the P when you went to start it. This is another symptom of a failing neutral safety, if it is not illuminated it doesn't know it's in park.

The square around the it isnt always lit up. I notice yesterday it does it in alot of the gears. Gotta wiggle the auto shifter to get the square to light up. Is the neutral safety hard to replace. I dont care to dive into it and fix it if I can. Thanks guys!

ADJUSTMENTS - GEARSHIFT CABLE

Check adjustment by starting the engine in PARK and NEUTRAL. Adjustment is CORRECT if the engine starts only in these positions. Adjustment is INCORRECT if the engine starts in one but not both positions. If the engine starts in any position other than PARK or NEUTRAL, or if the engine will not start at all, the transmission range sensor may be faulty.

GEARSHIFT ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

1. Shift transmission into PARK.
2. Release cable adjuster lock tab (3) (underneath the steering column) to unlock cable.
3. Raise vehicle.
4. Disengage the cable eyelet from the transmission manual shift lever.
5. Verify transmission shift lever is in PARK detent by moving lever fully rearward. Last rearward detent is PARK position.
6. Verify positive engagement of transmission park lock by attempting to rotate propeller shaft. Shaft will not rotate when park lock is engaged.
7. Snap the cable eyelet onto the transmission manual shift lever.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Lock shift cable by pressing cable adjuster lock tab (3) downward until it snaps into place.
10. Check engine starting. Engine should start only in PARK and NEUTRAL.
