Towing w/ 47re (Updated)
Towing w/ 47re (Updated)
I realize this is my first actual post but I am on the board every day learning about these wonderful trucks. I'm converted from a PSD and so glad I finally wised up and got a real truck. Anyway, I have purchased a 1941 Dodge WC12 and will tow it roughly 7 hours home. I have the SO, auto with the 47re (the HO wasn't offered yet when I purchased), I know what's coming but with only half a left foot I am stuck with needing an auto.
Now on to the question, towing roughly 8,200 lbs. of old WWII iron back to Tenn. is it ok to pull in OD? I have the trailer set-up brakes dual axle the whole bit but just curious about gear selection. Any input would be welcome, thanks in advance...............

MX'er,
Here's a thread about the 48RE, but it applies to you too:

Knock yourself out and have fun with your new truck.
BTW, fill out the sig block a little so we know what you've got.

Yes you can pull in OD as long as it isn't hunting for gears. If it does then take it out of OD.
I pull in OD all the time from West to East Coast through the mountains. Just remember to run it hard because the CTD loves it ;D ;D

Mx.....I have a California so (235hp) and I pull 15k with my toyhauler and jeep inside in od on the flats...you will get the feel of what it is doing and know when to pop it out of od....keep the rpms at 1500 or higher tho and dont lug the engine...it pulls best at 2000+rpms...i get 12mpg while pulling my beast and get 15 pulling my regular travel trailer...I think they did some good things to the later 47re's and mine shifts nice and firm with no issues....enjoy!

If you read the manual....it will state that you can tow in OD, and if the tranny gets to warm it will shift down to cool and back to OD when ready. I pull 7000lb trailer through New England in OD and it has never shifted because of overheat. On real sharp grades I pull in direct.
Re:Towing w/ 47re
Just an update on the trip. 1002 miles total through rain on the way up and snow on the way back. Absolutely no problems at all. The truck did everything I expected it to do.
Average running with empty trailer, (about 1,875 lbs.) 16.8 by hand. Loaded average 12.9, also by hand.
I have attached a picutre of the rig before heading home.

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted the picture. It is actually a Lowes store which had been shut down, we were trying to stay out of the wind. It was cold enough trying to get everything loaded and the 20-30mph wind didn't help matters.
