Torque converter and flex plate clearances
Im finally getting ready to install the 48re into my 04.5. I have a new SFI flexplate and DPC single disc converter. I have a couple questions.
The converter seems to be fully seated but is .75" above the bell housing where the ATSG manual says it should be .75" below. there is no way this converter is going in that far. I made the stupid mistake of returning my core already so I cant measure the old one to compare it.
I test fit the SFI flexplate and it has a large gap between the plate and the torque converter bolting surface. Im wondering what the normal amount of gap is between the flexplate and converter? the old plate fits flat but Im thinking its just worn out and flattened? The pilot hole on the SFI seems to me loose too, my old worn out stock plate has a tighter fit. I read all kinds of great reviews on the SFI plate but Im not so sure, there are large burs on a few of the bolt holes on it too.

I'm thinking im fine, the ATSG book must be listing the clearance for a gas engine, I put the transmission in and the slide room on the converter looks good.
The flex plate seemed fine too, I bolted it to the converter to see what it looked like before putting it in. I guess I'm just used to seeing 25 year old parts that dont have any spring left in them.

Those new SFI flex plates are junk. Very poor design. New stock ones fit perfectly onto the TQ's with no gap. Torquing the bolts down WILL close the gap but at the expense of bending the steel (never a good ideal on a rotating assembly) Check out the Forum 911 posts. Hope yours holds up.
