The only maintenance I don't do on my truck is the oil change since its done 1-2 times a month and I don't want all the oil just sitting around. Anyway, the shop I normally have it done at I think they overfilled it. I jut noticed the bottom side is completely coated along with the front axle, maybe came out the blow out tube??? Oil level is fine and the truck seems like nothing is wrong when driving. Can overfilling the engine oil be very harmful? TIA

 

Depending on how over-full it is, you run the risk of blowing seals. Are you sure it's oil, and not tranny fluid from the power steering? I've got a small leak from my steering gearbox, just haven't had time to deal with it.

 

Definetly not the PS. I had that leak and fixed it awhile ago. It's engine oil and it looks like its coming from the blow out tube?! It's quit a bit so I'm taking it back to the shop this evening when I get back into town. Hopefully nothing was/is harmed.

 

Are you really changing the oil 1-2 times a MONTH? How many miles are on your truck?

Anyway, did you smell the oil to make sure there is no diesel in it?

 

No diesel in the oil. The truck has 200+k miles and I bought it with 40k couple years ago. In the last year I've been putting 4-8k a month and I change at 4k miles...I know I could go longer but that's what I like to do. I'm at the shop waiting to hear what they have to say.

 

Well this shop is just a lube shop and they determined that it's not the blow out tube. There's oil in front and above the blow out tube so I'm thinking a leak somewhere. It's coming from the driver side and not the passenger side. Is been raining here and supposed to all weekend so when it stops raining I crawl under there. If I don't find anything, I guess it'll go to the diesel shop down the road.

 

Thought I'd add some pics to show where oil is. Mostly the front diff and pan and driver wheel well.

 

Check the oil level. If it's too high correct it, clean things up and see if the blow-by continues. If it's not too high then clean things up and begin the troubleshooting to see where the oil is coming from. With the miles you put on the oil dragon should rear it's head pretty quickly. Hope it is something simple and easy to fix. Good luck with it

 

The oil dragon?? Maybe the front crankshaft seal?

 

That's a lot of oil. Definitely get the oil level correct. Then clean the undercarriage up so that you can see exactly where the oil is coming from. Keep extra oil on hand.

Ohh, just because it has been known to happen, have you pulled the filter to see if it is not dubled-ringed? (ie...they left the old filter seal on there and installed the new filter on top, creating a massive leak when the truck is on and under pressure).

 

leak is on drivers side filter is on passengers side can rule that out

 

The oil level is at the top of the "safe" indicator. I got a brief moment to pull the wheel well liner and wiped as much oil off as I could. I really can't tell where the leak is. Seems most of the oil is just underneath the fuel filter housing, some beside it and not really any forward(radiator side) of it. Again, it's all over the front diff, driver side of the pan, shock and spring. Are there any seals on the side of the block?? I'll go wash it up after it stops raining...kinda suck as this is a work tool

 

Oil pan seal ans front crank seal up there. Seeing it in the wheel well it must bu flung there some how. Can you take it to a do it yourself car wash to spray it all clean? Spray some good degreaser first and hit it with the high pressure and that should get things nice and clean to help pin point the leak much easier than just wiping things with rags.

 

I'll have to wait till next week to take it to a car wash. I thought the front crank seal was in the front of the engine???
