Tighten transmision bands?
I was reading my maintence schedule today and noticed a section about when servicing the transmision one should tighten the bands. What does this mean? and how do I do it?
I just had mine done at the dealer a few weeks ago. There are two adjustments one on the outside of the housing and one in the pan. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS but I believe it was 17 inch pounds then back off 3/4 of a turn then tighten.. On the one outside. I will have the one inside done when I bring it back for the two sensors in the tranny that are giving me trouble. Line pressure and load sensors. The adjustment bolt on the outside can be found on the drivers side bellhousing about 2-3 inches above the pan, and about 3-4 inches back from the engine. It is a torx or allen bolt with a jamb nut.
72 inch/pounds and then back off.
That's basically handtight with a socket in your hand(No Ratchet!) then back off about a turn. The band should still be a little loose....
Many people will tell you there's no reason to tighten those bands unless you are having a problem. If you need to tighten them, you probably have a bigger problem in there......

you must have really strong fingers!!!!!
its a little tighter than that.....
72 inch pounds isn't much. Thats what the book says though. Actually I think it's 72 inch pounds and then back off 1.5 or 2 turns.
My method always worked well when i was drag racing and the speed shop owner told me he did the same thing...

I just rebuilt my tranny and torked it to 72 inch pounds so I know how much it is....but the front band is not thas fussy at all so as long as it is at least a little loose it ok. everyone seems to have a differnt opinion on it. the manual says 72 inch pounds and back it out 2 turns. Dunrite says just snug then back out 2.5 and no more than 3.5. transgo says snug with short wrench then back out 1 3/4. who's right? they all are ive tried them all and they all work!!!! I wasnt busting your chops just joking around...

I don't agree. I tow heavy with my rig all the time and when mine was adjusted he had to spin 5 times before it even touched, then torqued down... and at least I remember the 7 part of the torque thats why I said don't quote me. But I would have it done every time the dealer flushes the trans. but all my truck does is pull. as the diesel tech told dc when replacing my injector... "I use my truck like a semi".
You might not agree but actually there is no way to CHECK the bans to see if out or not.I was in the auto repair field 25 plus years and the ONLY pans ever found OUT the units were already ruined due to a failure and it wasn't the ban that failed. You can actually move the lever by hand and get a idea if any adjustment needed.Never found any that is was.
We just had the pinion seal replaced yesterday under warranty on my wife's truck and while the dealer had the truck I had them service the transmission. They changed the fluid and filter and did not touch the bands. Her truck has 51k miles on it.
I had a 2001 Dodge Van with 46re transmission. I adjusted the bands at 34000 miles and 2 weeks later the transmission blew up. Dealer said I blew up the torque converter. Never did understand the real story. Swore off auto transmissions at that point and that is how I ended up with a diesel and 5 speed. That van tranny breaking was the best thing that ever happened to me.I never would have had the joys of the Cummins had it not happened.

Do you feel the same way about setting the valve lash on the engine??
