Thermostat and temp question

I have a question on the running temperature of the water.
When I got my truck a few months ago the temp would go all the way up to the 200 mark straight up,, then it would fall back and work it's way back to 200 and stay there. This to me is how it is suppose to work,,,, now since cold weather has arrives my temp comes up very slow and only makes it to the edge of the first number in 200, barely touching the 2.
I only have 12 miles to go but i would think if the thermostat was closed it would at least heat the water in the block to 200 before 12 miles.
How does the thermostat operate in your trucks.

Mine never even gets close to 200 degrees unless I'm towing heavy in the middle of summer. I guess that 180 stat might have something to do with that..

When New

When it was new did it run hotter for the first 100 or so miles ,,, does it take a trmendously long time to get to full operating temp in the winter..

I know it has a whole lot more coolong capacity than a gasser but I would still think it would not take 20 minutes for it to reach full operating temperature either if the thermostat was fully closed like it should be..

Don't worry it's working normal. 12 miles on a big a$$ cast iron engine like the CTD is not much. I have to go out of the way everyday just to get 10miles on mine.
Just shy of 200 is normal in most situations even when towing at highway speeds

I think the t-stat opens around 190 degress on the third gen. As far as slow warm-up in winter, it does take awhile to get these monsters up to 190 in the winter. If you have the high idel enabled you could us that to help warm up the truck a little more before leaving in the mornings.

If yo want to warm it up quicker then get yourself a winter cover, they work great.

I live in Texas and the coldest its been here is mid forties but I have only seen mine kick above the 2 under 200 once and that was raoring hard trying to pull my buddies Land Rover Discovery out with my stock tires in black dirt. Must be a 190 thermostat
