When you go to pull the covers off the differentials, you'll notice some dirt stuck to the pumpkin, on the outside of where the gasket seated. Well one way of cleaning the surface is soak a rag in some of the oil that's in the drain pan. All the dirt will stick to the rag, and not end up in the gears. Also saves you from using a ton of brake parts cleaner.
