Talk me out of this 04 3500

I can't quit looking at a 2004 3500 Dually 4x4 crew cab.
217,000 miles. Auto trans .
Should I stay away or investigate more.
$16,000 , dealer, used car lot, they have had it a while, I'm sure it could be had for less.
Won't be a daily driver, I'm looking for something to mount the camper on
and leave it on .

Sounds about the going rate or even on the cheap side of what they would be asking here in the bay area if real clean, is it the 2004.5 HO version? Should be a sticker on drivers side valve cover stating 325 hp if so. Any pictures?
GL with your decision.

I got a 2004 2500 since new, and absolutely love it. The salesman was actually telling the truth when he sold me. "This will be the last truck you would need to buy". All I have done was the usual, ball joints, ujoints and I did replace the front bearings since i did all the front stuff. I also did the steering box upgrade just last month and dang, this is better than a new truck. Thats not a bad price either...

Can I post a link to the dealers web site?
The Carfax says it just flunked emissions.
No emissions in my county but is that a sign that something serious mechanical is going wrong?
I have no problem doing deletes.

Did it come from out of state(kommiefornia)? Possible some deletes/mods that the DEQ did not like?
Any smoke at idle?
Mileage is not high but could be time for injectors of tranny problems--just guessing. Buying a used truck is always a risk .
And you know that salesmen always tell the truth
Look for mods on the truck.
Sounds like a nice rig.
Good luck with your choice-be wise and check it out carefully.

Well, it might a 04.5 when they slapped cats on them. The 04 has the 305/550. The 04.5 has the new and improved 325/600. The 04.5 has a 3 pulse injection system, full 4" exhaust system, larger turbo, redesigned head and bowl pistons, larger air box and its suppose to be a little quieter with lower emisions. So, if it actually is a 4.5, it may have failed because the cat was removed. Just my hunch....

The ad says HO.
So it's a 04.5 ?

I don't mind upgrading things over time, like the transmission, but I don't want
a can of worms where everything needs work right away.

I just re-read your post above and you have the Carfax. It should say the delivery date and I beleive that the 4.5 were produced 1/4 2004 onward. If it says deleivered earlier than that date, then it sould actually be a 2004. One way for sure to check is to ask the dealer to snap a picure for you thats on the valve cover (drivers side). It will state for sure what it is. If it displays 305hp its a 04 if it displays 325 then it is a 4.5. And yes, AZ does emissions, so if it failed as a 04, that puzzles me, unless there some sort of modded device on it when they tested it???

According to those pictures, that truck was originally a 2004.5.
Of course who knows what engine, trans and mods that 14+ year old truck has in it now.

According to this picture it is a 4.5 as it has the fan shroud that does NOT say "Caution fan" and from what I see is it still has the plastic cover on the pump so must still have the lift pump by the filter, not sure if that cover was left if they did the in tank pump updated pump as my 4.5 has that done and my cover is no longer there , maybe the tech who did mine didn't bother to put it back on.

Only thing I can see is I would install a set of the ebay leather covers like this:

I just looked at my engine and it appears to be the same, you should have a label on the radiator bracket stating, fuel system modification, which is the, in tank fuel pump mod. the only thing that seems to be missing is the filter monitor on the air box filter housing,
