Surging on Cruise, and backfire?

Thread about the '07 5.9 in my sig.

The issue is fuel system related. On cruise control my truck surges unless there is some load(i.e.- going up an overpass). The other symptom is what I would call a backfire at idol. I can stand outside the truck and hear it. I'm not real familiar with the fuel system, but have a basic understanding and have my own hypothesis.

Things to know-
Fuel Filter is good
Had symptom before Dr. P installed.
Cruise surging was not as bad before DP installed.
100k on the truck.
The "backfire" can be described as pooof noise

Based on the symptoms you are describing I would check valve adjustment. It sounds like you may have a tight or burnt intake valve.

no codes whatsoever.

FCA? Enlighten me please, when it surges the most is under normal cruising load, straight, flat highway, 65 mph.

I'm not sure what to check for on the valves. I'm sure I can figure it out with a lil' help from the internet. I've just never had to mess with a Cummins Head before.

FCA= Fuel Control Actuator. On the CP3.

Adjusting valves: http://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-cu...tment-diy.html

I'm agreeing with the valves.

If the actuator is cheap enough I'll replace it anyway. Thnx for the link, and all the help. I'll update probably Monday after I've had a chance to get into it. I was originally thinking about an injector actuator being the problem.

you might want to invest in the arson kit while your at it.. since the FCA is in that kit.. my FCA was $153 from cummins.. sucked aparently the days of them being $90 is long gone.
