Stock Fuel filter housing ??
Stock Fuel filter housing ??
I added a pre-filter, GDP fuel pump and the 2 micron filter to my truck last fall. Living in the Northeast I kept my stock filter housing in the loop to have the fuel heated in the winter.
My setup is pre-filter > GDP > stock filter housing > 2 micron > CP3.
My question is can I use the stock filter housing without a filter in it? I want to keep in in the loop only for the heating properties. The 2 micron filter is larger and much easier to replace where I have it mounted. It costs less than the stock filter.
Thoughts? Has anyone ran without a filter in the housing?
Thanks, Jeff

I run both the stock filter and the 2-micron spin on. I kind of use the 10-micron factory filter as a pre-filter. And it's also needed for water separation like jkitterman already pointed out.
I will definately keep the filter for the water seperator function. Need to state in the 4 years I have had the truck I have yet to see any noticable water when changing the factory filter. I presently monitor fuel pressure right before the CP3. When I start to see pressure dropping it can be any 1 of 3 filters. I usually change the pre-filter 1st. Then factory.. then 2 Micron. I check pressure between each filter change to see if it was that filter causing the pressure drop. Maybe I need to add 2 more fuel pressure sending units and a 3 position switch so I can determine which filter is at fault.

Not being cheap... Just don't want to be wasting my hard earned money.
If I can change the pre-filter 3-4 times without needing to change the other filters the money saved grows quickly. The last thing I want to do is throw away a 20% full filter for no reason. If someone was giving me the filters for free I still would not want to change them if they are not used.
Factory filter $12, 2 Micron $11, Pre-filter $5
Pre filter is just to keep the big stuff from clogging the GDP pump up. GDP recommended it. The 2 micron filter is very large and I would think having the factory 10 micron in front of it should extend its filtering life substantially
