Starting issue - turn key and nothing?
Last week when temp was -6 went to start truck and nothing. No click, no turn over, nothing. All electrics came on and heard fuel pump cycle. Batteries strong and fully charged with clean posts. Came home on lunch break with temps in high 20's and truck started fine. Next morning at 3 degrees same thing, truck would not start. Went out this morning with temps in the 40's and truck fired right up. I've swapped out the starter solenoid relay with spare I had in case that is the problem, but wonder if it could be the starter solenoid itself? Forgive my ignorance but is the starter solenoid attached to the starter itself? Neither Advance Auto or Rock Auto offer the starter solenoid. This problem definitely seems to be temp related and just surfaced as I've had truck over 10 years starting with no problems in much colder temps. Just posted in hopes that others might share some thoughts on what this might be. Thank you in advance.
Same thing happened to me with my 99. What I did was pull the starter and notice the insulation from the wire going from the solenoid to the starter motor was cracked and tuching the case possibly grounding out, also soldered the wire too the solenoid, It was a replacement starter 2 years ago, and put wire loom over the wire. I also replaced the ignition switch. No problems since, but it also hasn't gotten that cold here again
