squeek/grind in reverse only?
squeek/grind in reverse only?
I have never seen this before but maybe some of you guys with more experience have. I have a grinding/squeek type sound coming from my truck in reverse only. Not when rolling forward. I have a rotor on the back right that needs to be replaced, my father in law borrowed it for a couple weeks while I was out of town last year and ground the brake pads down to metal and damaged my rotor. I couldnt afford to replace it at the time so I slapped some new pads on it and called it good. This was about 8K miles ago. Could this be the source of the sound? Again, only in reverse is strange and has me alittle confused. Any thoughts?
i think it is the rear u joints on the drive shaft my buddies squeeked only in reverse kinda wierd check your u joints we sprayed them down with pb blaster and it went away for a couple days then came back
I would try to replace the rotor first and if that dont fix it then try the u joints. when my joints went out it sounded like that at first but mine wouldnt quite down when i tried the wd 40 method tho. I went ahead and replace all of them with some brute forces. It fixed the problem for me.
The new pads will work into any grooves in the rotor, that should not be the problem. I noticed I have a squeek when the weather is cold and I am backing up, it goes away in warmer weather. I was ready to replace the u-joint, but I found no play and it warmed up outside and it went away.

Had the same thing, in reverse only. Rear dshaft u joints. I would pull the dshaft and take it to a driveline shop in your area. Basically the needle bearings have turned to dust and it is a PAIN to get the joints out. Took me the better part of a day and I hated it. Have someone back your truck up while you are next to it. Should be able to hear it coming from the driveshaft. Have the joints replaced with greasable joints.
Thanks for the input. I'll go ahead and take a look at the Ujoints on the rear end and see if there is any play. with 140k miles its probably not out of line to go ahead and replace the u joint anyhow. Seems like its always something.
So it was the ujoints. Cant say for certain which one it was being that there are three on the rear driveshaft but I replaced them with some greasable ujoints from napa. Those **** needle rollers are a pain. I def said some cuss words. I had to cut the old ones out with a torch. Anyone else ever had that happen?
