New to site... I have been reading for a while but had to get a new e mail address to post.

So... any hoo. I have a kenwood nav system thats a combo gps/ dvd. I have everything working but i need to find and tap the speed sensor(vss?) to get the turn by turn navagation to work. anyone that might have an idea on how to get this done, i will pay large sums of $$$$, ok i wont, but it would help me a bunch. well thanks in advance for the help

As much as you may not like this idea, I would get a dealer you trust to do the install at least as far as tapping into the speed sensor goes. On another forum there were reports of an owners warranty being denied completely on the whole truck because he installed something that also tapped into the speed sensor and DC thought that this may have been tampering with the odometer causing his warranty to be void immediately. I don't know all the specifics on the other forum about this and I don't really have any comments because I don't know the whole story, however if it were me, to avoid this possible nightmare I think I would have the dealer do it because then they can vouch for the fact that it wasn't odometer tampering and that there will be a paper trail going back to them that they did install it if another dealer tried stirring the pot.

I'm confused. Doesn't the GPS track its own speed along the track?

Why does it need to tie into the speed sensor?

not a bad idea to take it to the dealer. Most gps systems use the satalite only . but this system uses gyros and vss + the gps signal. i gusess that it is to make the tracking more accurate. I have a function on the screen "gps signal" that tell me how fast i am moving. the gps is working and tracking my movement , but i have been told untill i get the vss hooked up to the unit my turn by turn directions will not work i have talked to my dealer a while back, they were no help then 12-05. maby the tech manuals were not in yet?
so if i was to tap into the vss my self where would i find it?i have been told 10 diffrent wires (color codes) and places to find it. thanks guys!

My friend is the release engineer for NAV systems for Denso. He has done lots of custom installs (cars, trucks, RV's, even a boat). Everytime, he complains that the hardest part is finding where to get the vehicle speed signal to get everything working right.

Vehicle speed signal comes from the ABS module and is broadcast across the bus. I would also make sure your dealer is cool with it first. However, the odo messing thing is BS. The odo reading is stored in multiple modules in the vehicle. if someone messed with the ABS to disable it, all sorts of things would go wrong and more than one module would know about it.
