Smoke Management
Smoke Management
Warmed up the motor to normal operating temperatures and shifted thru the 6 speeds. I went higher RPS's than I normally shift. Normally I shift around 2000-2100. This time though I went to 2400-2500 RPM's before I shifted.
I expierenced ALOT of smoke come out of the tailpipe when the motor went to the higher RPM's. The smoke showed it's face only in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears.
My question is...Is this normal or have I been babying the engine in the way that the motor hasn't reached those RPM's before. I realize that there is a 3 step injection process which involves injecting fuel after the cycle has been completed resulting in poorer fuel mileage... possibly more smoke than normal?
I'm running Stanadyne performance formula for the low sulphur fuels and poor cetane levels achieved around here. Could the additive cause it to smoke more?
Just bought a Muffler Elimination Pipe from Geno's... Wondering if it would smoke even more once it is installed?
Don't get me wrong... the smoke I caused was alot more from burning rubber on the road. It caused quite a stir from the cars following behind me. I was just amazed at the AMOUNT of smoke.

I get the smoke also, mostly in the gears that you described. I was told by the smarter members of this forum that it is normal for a diesel and not to worry about it, so I dont. Now I think it is cool.
I didn't think mine smoked at all but the other night while I was driving on the interstate I needed to pass a slower truck and while accelerating I looked in the mirror and noticed a fair amount of smoke in the headlights of the truck behind me. It wasn't a thick black blinding cloud of smoke more like a greyish lighter color. In town and during the day I don't se any at all so I guess all this sounds normal? Most diesels produce some kind of smoke so I am not too worried.
I have an 04 and get no smoke unless I put my VA box on #2. I don't think smoke is a good thing. It may be "normal" in diesels but the truth is (I beleive)this is unburned fuel and if it is smoking it is also washing the cylinder walls no?
My wife has a 96 TSD Ford Van and babies it around town. When I use it I try and get it at WOT for a few times and it smoke like hell and then "cleans up". This is obviously carbon build up or so I'mm told and the WOT persuades it to move along. JMO

Forgot to mention that my F-350 psd did the same thing...you could only see the smoke in the car headlights behind you when you tromped on it and no sign of smoke during the day except a little on start up.
I too have babied mine, very rarely do WOT. I actually opened a thread on the 24V portion of this site about this issue. I am leaning toward carbon build up, and am going to go WOT atleast once a week, and see if I still get lots of smoke.

OT but how do you like it with the muffler off, how does it sound, how loud, and do you have the drone?
Still waiting to put the "MEP" on the truck. Hopefully the package arrives tomorrow.
Here's a update of the smoke issue...
I ran the motor tonight at the same rpm's that I did the night before. Not alot of smoke came out this time. That leads me to believe that the smoke was caused by carbon buildup from not running that high rpm's before.
Once you hit the high rpm's in all of those gears it's alot easier to hit the higher rpm's. What I mean is that the motor doesn't seem to hesitate to go to the higher rpm's once it's already been there.
Wondering if the resonator will eventuallysuccum to carbon buildup and lead to blockage of exaust air. Being that the 3rd gen. motor uses unburned fuel as part of the emissions, would it eventually block the exhaust? Buddy of mine took his resonator (cat) and to looked like alot of little holes...kinda like a screen door. He had a DMAX. Multiple people have told me to keep it on and so I think I will.
STRjock81= I will let ya know when I get the muffler taken off and replaced with a straight pipe, how it sounds, drone and turbo whine.

You guys that putz around in your trucks and run them too easy really need to get them out and run them hard occasionally. They're designed to be a working engine not a commuter motor, I would head out to the highway and run it at 80 for a little while or go take some grades at a hearty clip. And don't be afraid to crank the RPM, run in 5th part of the time and cruise at 2500-2600 RPM.
