Question Silencer Ring Removal A Mistake ??

For what its worth,,

Havin a brew with a bud o mine last nite. This guy is on a technical team for an offshore
race boat team out of SO CAL. His primary job is intake and exhaust. They run twin
V-12s with quad turbos on each. Among other things I mentioned to him how
a lot of diesel pickup owners take off there silencer rings for the sound.

At first he didn't know what I was refering to, as I explained it he said "oh, you must
be talking about what we call FLOW IMPROVER CONES or TURBULENCE REDUCER RINGS"

He said they add those to there race turbos to smooth out the flow into the neck
of the turbo to reduce spin up, or lag time He said you can tell when they are working cause they quiet down the turbo whistle a little as they reduce the turbulence at the turbo inlet.
They mill there own rings depending on the individual turbo flow characteristics.

He added that they also used "vortex chambers" in the intake tubes to get the air
rotating in the same direction as the turbo to help the spin up process.

Ring any bells ??..

I have often thought that removing that ring must disturb the airflow and cause turbulence. I'm glad to hear this, it makes me feel more sane.
I should mention that I removed mine anyway.

He's right, but there are both on the trucks. The silencer ring does take away from the flow, so they added the "turning vanes" to help direct the flow around the corner and gain back SOME of the lost airflow.

The silencer ring is only a silencer, it does limit the airflow capability of the air intake duct.

PJ,, I was wondering that too..but does the dyno plot turbo lag or
spin up response ??

I thought the same thing. It looks like there would be a smoother flow with the ring in. I took mine off for a couple of days and didn't notice any noise difference so I out it back in.

I took mine out about 3 years ago and never looked back. That little HY really screams at 35 psi with a scotty 2 and no silencer ring. Spool up be danged, the sound is oh so worth it.

I pulled that little white curved baffle out of the elbow and the ring and lost noticable amounts of low end torque. I may put the ring back in.

Pulled mine out.... threw it away.... glad I did.....

No noticeable performance change. But I love the sound.

I have read other posts that said there was no measurable difference in performance one way or the other, just the sound.

Didn't notice any spool up or bottom end loss. What I did notice is that the neighborhood stops what they are doing to watch for the F16 that just landed and is taxiing down the street.

Also, did you notice the wastegate dumping sound in between shifts? It sounds awesome now that it's magnified 100X. Wouldn't go back no matter what.

i pulled mine 2 years ago, and i cut out the baffles in the factory intake tube, its no afe but it was a cheap way to make my turbo louder. I haven't noticed any power loss. just screamin turbo.

Red face

Would removing the ring silencer make old guys like me feel young again? Or would we even HEAR the difference now? I wonder.......
