Silencer ring

I see people talking about removing the silencer ring. Were is this silencer ring, how do you remove it, and what advantage do you get on removing it?

The silencer ring is visible right in front of the intake side of the turbo, when the intake hose is removed. To pull it out, work a small standard blade screwdriver under the snap ring that holds it in. Be sure to remove any small metal shavings made from the steel ring rubbing the alluminum. The silencer ring then just drops out, and your done! Other than the big rig sound from the whistling turbo, no advantage. Some report nicer sound, more power etc., but then relay that really they just like the sound more, so they tromp it to hear it spool up!

Can you re-install the silencer ring if you wanted to? Will removing the silencer ring void your warranty?

I removed mine on my previous truck and didn't notice much difference in turbo noise...nothing to get excited about. When I decided to sell my truck I put the silencer ring back in and the retainer did not fit quite right. It looked like the retainer got distorted after removing it...sorta bent out of shape. I didn't remove the one on my current truck. I believe people THINK the turbo sounds louder with it removed becaues they start to listen for it and expect it to be louder. Where as before they didn't pay any attention to it. Truth is; it's barely noticeable.

I don't know if it would void your warranty but what would happen if you had turbo failure and you took it in for warranty work and they noticed someone had tampered (removed) with it?? You could always reinstall it before taking it in for service but there will be signs (scatches, etc.) that it had been once removed. It just might be enough of a reason for the dealer to deny warranty work. Who knows? You just take chance, that's all. Chances are nothing would come of it. But then again maybe it would. It's just a roll of the dice.

I removed mine as well and could not tell any difference in sound at all, I ran it like that for about 100 miles and decided to put it back in.

I did an experiment about 2 weeks ago. Put it back in... drove it.

Big difference. I think you guys either have high frequency hearing issues or didn't notice what I noticed. I'm not joking. A lot of people have high frequency hearing loss. My wife cannot hear my turbo at all.

With the ring in place the whistle comes on more delayed in the rpm ramp-up and when it comes on it's very sudden and for a shorter duration.

Then I removed it...

Whistle comes on at idle! You have to have good ears. I think that's where the silencer ring is tuned... low power whistle is removed with it.

Without the ring she has a beautiful fully progressive turbo whistle that winds down quite loudly after letting off the throttle.

One last note... I do have the intake tube empty also. I removed the baffle inside but I did the test with that part the same on both comparisons.

Cool

To really get the bang for your efforts when you remove the ring, remove the baffles and go with an aftermarket air intake. Then yank the muffler and you sound like a jet plane. Just ask my wife!

I noticed a big difference after I removed mine. Do a search and there are some good threads with pictures on how to remove it. It's pretty simple. No performance gains though so don't expect that.

No hearing loss with me, I hear just fine unless the wife is dictating work then I grow a deaf ear.

Like I said before...absolutely no difference in sound whatsoever with the ring removed. Maybe you guys are trying to justify your effort in removing the darn thing and actually believe your hearing more of a turbo sound.

Effort?? It took all of five minutes.

There was definitely an increase in turbo whistle on my truck. Even my wife noticed. Maybe YOUR truck is DIFFERENT......you know.....SPECIAL. Probably had to take the short train from Mexico instead of the train for normal trucks.

Anyways, just an observation... so nobody get there panties all bunched up but could the 555 turbo be different from the 600 turbos? Maybe just maybe the silencer rings are ...possibly different?? Things that make you go hmmmm.

Could be. I didn't notice you have the 600. You have a cat too, correct?? That could make a difference. I have no cat...and barely have a muffler. BIG difference.

Yes sir...I wish mine didn't have the cat...maybe the darn thing will fall off or come up missing if you know what I mean. I too believe the 555's will benefit more so than the 600's having the silencer ring removed.

I think having a cleaned out intake tube, no CAT and 5" straight exhaust makes the difference between having the ring and removing it much more noticable.

You can see the ring perfectly in this 600 turbo cutaway picture. The gray thing an the far right,
