Sick 2004 Cummins

Help,

2004 Dodge ram 2500 SLT, engine smoking black, surges, erratic throttle response, also quits some times on deceleration . Changed FCA, transfer pump psi 12 , and flows 47 - 48 oz in 21 - 25 sec., HPCR sensor voltage 1.56 when idling OK, 1.14 when surging. What are the voltages mean in fuel rail pressure?
Anyone got any ideas on this problem? Just bought a Auto Enginuity ST06 with the enhanced Chrysler software to run tests, hopefully have that wed.

Thanks

We don't have a MAF on these Trucks as far as I know. You might mean the MAP.
Try pulling it off and cleaning it with Carb Cleaner...
Is the Air Filter clean?, A dirty Filter has been known to cause those symptoms...
Are you making oil, as in Diesel in the oil???
Don't know about the voltage, maybe some1 who knows will be on...

Thanks, fixed it.

If the MAP sensor is not reading correctly you could be fueling too early.

I assume the truck is stock?

More info

Stock except for K&N filter and Cat back Magnaflow Have codes P0148 HPCR fueling checksum error and P0192 HPCR fuel pressure sensor voltage too low. Has no MAP sensor but does have inlet air temp/psi sensor.

2004 more info

Cleaned the air filter, was dirty but the filter indicator was OK , got it back together, was only able to clear P0192 code but not P0148, started fine ,sounded normal, was warming up, jazzing throttle was normal, pulled out of driveway go 70 feet comes back , all the noise from the injectors, erratic throttle response , surges at idle 550 to 1100. If the common rail pressure sensor went bad when it gets warmed up and drops voltage to ECM what does the ECM do, increase rail pressure? Not fuel in oil. Is the MAP sensor the one on the manifold behind the common rail?

Thanks for any help
Tim

Black Plastic sensor. Located about 3/4 of the way back on the head.....drivers side. Held in by two Torx screws. # 25's I think.

Fixed it today, fuel rail pressure sensor was dropping voltage output when it warmed up, see my first posting

Thanks All
