Shudder/Flutter in 2nd Gear

i'm having a shudder/flutter in 2nd gear. I notice it every day and especially when I pull a trailer. I can't tell if it is from the clutch or injectors.

Anyone having similiar problems???

Yep, I'm planning on doing that. It drives fine but just has that slight shudder on take-off. It almost feels like it could be an injector issue (although I don't know what that would feel like). I think it happens only under load. If I take off hard, I feel the shudder in the pedal. I want to hook it up to a loaded trailer again and see if it does it again.

I'll give you something else to think about. The rear springs are as soft as they could make them and still carry the load. The helpers do most of the work. On mine I get a chug as the rear axle tries to wind up with a springey action. Yes it feels like an engine miss but is not, it is the rear springs flexing, the more power you add the worse it gets. Just the right rougness of the road and the right load and it is a pain pulling a bad hill.

What is a solution to that problem?

Re:Shudder/Flutter in 2nd Gear

for all practical purposes there is not a cure for mine. It is the basic design. It has riser blocks betweent he axle and the springs which give it great leverage to twist. It would take stronger springs to hold the axle solid, that would create poor ride. Ladder bars would cure it but they tear the frame as I am informed. I would bet that this is one of the reasons for the low GVCW listed for the CID. I have lived with mine for many thousands of miles.

Take a peak at the following thread:

One member has had a shim put in the carrier bearing assembly. Mine is going in this week for the same. Hopefully it will take care of the problem. You might do a search for that thread. His was completely gone with that remedy. They used a 1/2" piece of stock to drop the assembly down. I have attached a pic of his work.

Ya know I will have to try that, mine did get worse when I switched to the six speed and a six inch shorter shaft.
