Should I replace the rocker arms or not?
I'm replacing the long block in my 04.5 and the guy at the shop thats doing it showed me 4 or 5 of the plastic caps on the rocker arms that had cracks in them. Should I be concerned about these? Should I replace all the rockers or just the ones with cracked caps? I have been reading through threads on this issue and have came across a couple of threads that say you can use the rocker arms off the 98.5 to 2002 that have metal caps instead of plastic. Anyone with any feed back is greatly appreciated.

I just replaced the one I had cracked. Depending on how many miles you have. I may would consider replacing them all. More common reason to replace them would be due to gauling on the rocker shaft.

Are you talking about the plastic retaining caps? If so yes the early metal version on 24v's are compatible ( I did a Google search for you). BTW, the retaining caps are there for aiding in assembly, once the rockers are in place and the valve lash set they are there just for the ride.

Thank you for the reply MikeyB. I did read a couple of threads that talked about the older model trucks having the rockers with the metal caps and if I was going to have to replace them and those would work I figured I would use them. I also read other threads that talked about just putting the old caps back on and setting the valve lash and not worrying about them. There were a couple of threads where people stated the caps were missing all together and they was not having any issue running without them. I'll take your advice and just go with the rockers I have. A new set of rockers would be over $800. Thanks
