I shift my 6 speed without a clutch,is that hurting it,is it ok? I heard it was not good to do that. And i also heard it won t hurt anything.

 

If you can match the speed of the engine EXACTLY to the speed of the tranni then you are not hurting anything. Chances are however that you cannot match the speed perfectly and therefore are making the synchros work harder. In time there is a good chance that you will shorten the life of the synchros.

Well how can you tell if your shifting at the EXACT time/speed of the engine? Is it when there is no grinding? Or can you still be off (causing damage) if it "feels" like the same speed and slips into gear smoothly? See, I try to use my clutch as little as possible since a mechanic told me that would be the 1st thing to go out on my truck (still pretty much stock).

 

I feel with proper use a clutch should last the life of the truck. Just try to use the clutch and get your foot off. I see alot of people holding there stick shift on a hill with the clutch. Makes for a speedy take off but burns the clutch up. I would rather pay for a clutch vs transmission, for sure while there in there to repair the tranny you will want a new clutch anyways. As long as you are doing a good job of shifting without a clutch, I don't believe you are not doing the transmission any harm. Consider that on a transmission with worn out synchros it is easier to shift without grinding without the clutch.

What does wear synchros out if fast shifting and downshifting without matching the engine speed to the drivetrain speed.

 

Thanks, I guess I'll go back to basics and shift with the clutch (gonna be tuff since I'm used to driving a Peterbuilt without using the clutch). Would rather pay for a new clutch than a tranny!!!

I like to half clutch. Works well without any grinding.

 

How long's the warranty on the clutch?
Why would you not want to use the clutch?
Shoulda got an auto.

 

I think the warrantee on the clutch is nil....normal wear and tear item...just like brake pads...If you had real low miles, you may talk them into fixing under warrantee..........just shift it...mine slips right in 5 if I bump that dog just to the left of the position...works for me...FWIW - JKE

 

You paid for the clutch, you just as well use it

 

correct...I should clearify...I am using the clutch. some complain of a notchy shift...I just barely grase that dog as I go to 5th...works good on mine. If I go too far to the right, it is notchy not into reverse notchy though- JKE
