Service AC yourself?

I was wondering how difficult it was to service the AC yourself? I have heard of people doing it and als asked my local Diesel mechanic. He said NOT to touch it, to take to dealer so they could hook it up to a machine that cost 6,000 according to him.. LOLOL My AC blows VERY COLD but takes a little time to cool down... It's been 108-110 here and it takes a good 2-3 miles maybe?? I always start it on Outside air, then switch to recirc when it starts to cool off. What do you guys think?

Normal. Takes a long time to get rid of the heat in the cab. I usually roll the windows down and it still takes a mile or so in 95 degree weather. You can buy a cheap refill kit if you want to double check the low side pressure. Granted it won't be an exact science, but it will tell you if you are close. You can buy a guage set for around 150 bucks that will tell you exactly what is going on. Their "6,000$" machine will do everything. It has guages, vacuum pump, recharge station and everything. Great machine to have, but the same thing can be done with a lot less equipment.

I think your local diesel mechanic is right. If the a/c blows cold leave it alone. At 110 degrees and it cools down in two to three miles it is fine.

Thanks everyone! This is the first truck that will drip Evaporator water out the FRONT of the engine!! LOLOL Only until you drive the truck a ways.... But water travels down the AC lines to just above the water pump and thats where it drips.. I guess it's a low point and I am GLAD it is not coolant!!!!

You can buy a good set of A/c r-134a High/low with refill hose and gauges for as little as $50 bucks from Harbor Freight or your local parts store such as Checker or Oreilly's. The vacuum pump is the spendy part. A refridgerant can can be used with hot water to recharge the system. However, I prefer teh machine for accuracy in making sure the PAG or Mineral oil is also recharge with the system. That $6,000 machine is nice, but you still need to know how the system works.

If the systems is working then leave it alone.

Been hot and humid, hasn't it? What makes it even worse is it's still darn near 90* at midnight!

Sounds to me like your AC is working fine. I have a black Megacab and mine cools in a few miles also. What I notice is the interior panels really soak up the heat and take some time to cool off, and until then the AC has to work pretty hard. I usually put it on outside air until the cab gets somewhat cool, then switch to recirc when it feels like the interior air is cooler than the outside air. I'll also leave the windows down for a mile or so to push out all the superheated air in the cab. Seems to work pretty good.
