Serpentine belt

Just changed out my serp belt and tensioner. What a pain, took me less time to do my 6.0.

I bought a Gates idler tensioner, way heavier duty than the stock one. Can't complain got 94k out of the original belt.

why did you change it? I had over 238000 on my original belt and the only reason I changed mine is because the kids bought me one for Christmas! I took my old one and folded it up neatly and put it back in the new sleeve and it's in my tool box now as a spare. LOL

It started chirping, plus the idler tensioner bearings were on their way out. The belt had no cracks in it but the grooves were wearing and since I had it torn down I changed it out.

I've got the new one in the truck... waiting for a good time to put it on. I've got a nice belt tool to change it out, too...

I didn't think they were too bad to do since I figured out a trick. I put a long extension (thin wall pipe) on my 1/2" ratchet so I can tie it off once the tension is off so I have both hands free to work with the belt. Craig

It's not a new tool, it's just an easier one...

For some reason it makes me nervous thinking about changing the serp belt on this truck. The Chevy 350, no problem. But this one I'm chicken.

Put the new belt on and use the old one for a spare. Took me about 1/2 hour to change mine, most of the time was studying the way it went around the pulleys. Actually it took me about 2 hours because the parts house gave me the wrong belt and I had to take it back for the correct one.

So change the belt, you would hate it if you broke the belt and found that you have the wrong replacement and you are in the middle of nowhere.

I used a breaker @16" long that had a hole through the handle. I used a hook strap and tied it off.....HTH
