Hi John,

I posted a pic of your truck and plow last fall in this thread. I hope you didn't mind:

I use DT 2000 and the 7000 oil. What is the difference between the 7000 and the 9000? My rep said the semi-syn 7000 is all I need. So then, why do they make the 9000? My rep showed me the bearing roller wear scar demo with the Rube Goldberg, science fair looking contraption . I think the test must be rigged somehow! The demo made the 7000 look infinately better then the Delo sample I took to him but my mpg didn't go up one bit with the 7000. I"ve seen that demo with several products and I think it's "smoke and mirrors"! My rep also said my oil usage would go down. My CTD used 1 pint in 5k miles with the Delo and it's used that much already in 2500 miles with the 7000. Not trying to rain on the parade but what's up with this great 7000 stuff? A pessimist is an optimist with a lot of experience! I guess that be me! Craig

Craig,

The 7000 is a 15W-40 that uses a Group II/GroupIII base stock blend and is a darn good oil. The 9000 is a Group III/Group IV blend that will still offer the same protection as the 7000, but it has better cold flow properties and a better NOACK volatility rating (heat burnoff...useful in turbocharged engines).

Either oil is a darn good one.

By the way, don't worry about the goofy tests that these guys use. The proof is in the pudding so to speak on oils.....look at UOA's to determine how well an oil performs. Schaeffer's is a top notch oil.

Here's a link to a slew of diesel engine UOA's.

A lot of people have noted that the first couple of OCIs with Schaeffer's may see increased oil consumption, but then stabilizes. I personally have not noticed any add'l oil consumption over any other brand, but a pint in 2500-5000 miles is pretty minor to begin with. I mean, that could all be dependent on how long the truck sat idle before you checked the oil, if it was on a slight (maybe even unnoticeable) incline, the ambient temperature, etc. When you start missing a couple quarts in 5K you might have an issue.

There isn't anything magical about Schaeffer's 7000 or 9000--it is just a very good blend of base oils, and additives. Their penetro and micron moly proprietary additives really seem to help make the UOAs of their oil better than other very similar diesel oils.

BTW, 7000 is a group II+ and PAO blend, and 9000 is a GIII and PAO blend. The 9000 boasts better cold flow specs and is only a couple bucks a gallon more than the 7000 blend, so I just go that route. I just bought a case of 9000 gallons, and gave 15.XX bucks a gallon delivered to my shop. Cheaper than Rotella Syn, and it actually has PAO in it.
