Rough shifting with the 48RE

I noticed driving the 48RE without load, shifts fairly rough. I assume this is because the motor is so powerfull and is built to pull. Am I correct on this or do I need to have the dealership check it out.

I have yet to find an automatic behind a diesel that shifts with the smoothness of one behind a gas engine. It's probably normal, but I have no way of knowing what 'rough' means. If in doubt, ask the dealer to drive a different one.

It's a very strong, deliberate, thump especially with heavy footed take offs.

I would have the dealer check it out. Take the Tech for a drive and show him exactly what it is doing.

While coming to a stop, my 04 would downshift into 1st really hard. Tech said that it was not normal. The cable needed to be adjusted. Tech preformed the adjustment and it shifts perfectly now!

I don't know about the 48RE (yet), but with the 4R100 I had in my Ford, most (if not all) of the shift kits made the shifts firmer.

The theory is, as I understand it:

SMOOTH SHIFTS = SLIPPING = HEAT = THE ENEMY

The Hypertech PPIII I used had an option to increase the shift firmness for just this reason.

I agree with that Murvin. If you've ever had a shift kit installed, that's what the shifts on my 48RE feel like.

My 48RE shifts smoothly either on the throttle or off. Loaded or unloaded. If you're getting a "thump" I'd say that ain't right, at least compared to what I'm getting.

I have a 5.0L Mustang with a shift kit and that has a firm shift. Before the shift kit I'd say the Mustang and 48RE shift(ed) about the same.

One thing I do notice under moderate acceleration with the 48RE and all that CTD torque is the pull when it finally makes it fully into the next gear. Wow! It is a noticable push back into the seat.
