Rough Idle on Startup

The last couple of weeks my truck has a rough idle on startup and sometimes puts out some blue smoke. It quits when I give it a little gas pedal and raise the RPM above 1000 and then its fine the rest I drive it. I thought it might be because it has been cold here in Utah, but today it was 40 and it still did it. I have it pluged in at night..no change. Any thoughts?

Mine has also been doing this for the last 4000 miles or so. It is intermittant but happens a few times a week. The very first time it did it, I got a CEL. The dealer relashed the computer, but I am still having the same issue without any more CEL's.

Last time I was in for service, I told them I was still having some trouble. He said they have been getting quite a few complaints. He said there is not much they can do at this point until it gets more consistent or throws another CEL.

I've had it too. It also goes away once I get rolling.

mine will do the same from time to time, 40 is still cold for a diesel. I use to worry about it also but I dont belive you have any problem any more then anyone on here has had its common. you can check the heater grid make sure it is working or can cycle the key a few times to get some more heat in the intake air charge before start up. Seems when I have my truck pluged in the heater does not stay on as long on the first start up so I got tired of the smoke and cycle the key a few more times before start and its clean on start up. And there is a TSB for white smoke on start up so I would check into that also. check your oil if the level is fine (not high on the dip stick) you should be fine

I get the same thing occasionally in the winter on a cold start up. I found that it goes away if I stomp on it once in a while and really work the motor (after it is warmed up of course).
I think there gets to be come crud on the injectors and they need to be blown out every so often. At least thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
