Rough idle or Lope only in park on 03 with 275k miles.
Hey DTR,
Been gone quite a while. First gen fell ill and with current life plans may be retired to a farm truck vs daily driver.
I searched this on here and internet but didnt come up with a diffinitve answer. (maybe there isnt one?)
Just bought yesterday a 2003 single cab st 4x4 with 275k on the odo ( $9k out the door had AC!) seems to run good on the road good power and shifting, but when in neutral or park it lopes, not enough to move the Tach needle but enough to shake the cab and be noticable vs my buddys smooth and identicle 05 (I know they made changes at 04.5) I am worried its the injectors at this age, maybe the little thing on the pump ( A-something or M-something), maybe a filter. I know nothing about high idle vs not, it seems to idle at 800 or so like my first gen does.
I am not at all familure witht he comon rail other than just my time around this forum and looking under the hood of friends and familys (05 standard cab, 06 mega) I need some solid sage advice.
Thanks in advance and its good to be back and I am excited about my truck (for now....)
DC out!

Had same symptoms @ 120k miles. Narrowed it down to FCA...Fuel Control Actuator. Easy to test out if you have someone you can swap with...plug in and two (maybe 3) bolts.
Same symptoms at 160K + no or really long cold start. Turned out to be the 3 injectors after a bench test. New set and she's running smooth and I'm out some $$$'s!
Good luck.

I recently have the same issue and found on the Turbo Diesel Register website www.turbodieselregister.com issue 73 IT’S TIME TO INSPECT YOUR HARMONIC DAMPER
(Link to issue http://www.turbodieselregister.com/t...echTopics.html ). credits to David Magnoli TDR Writer, look for the
I tried to post the pdf but it’s too large. In short the damper has rubber between the inner and outer part of the damper that could cause the inner and outer parts to slip or deteriorate throwing it off balance and cause vibrations. I ordered a new one and currently in the midst of installing (along with replacing the front seal and other opportunistic maintenance issues) it to determine if this will fix it. Hopefully I will have it back together next week and post the results.

Thanks so far,
Update on symtoms: (new truck for me since tesuday this week, so still figuring it out)When AC compressor is on in park or neutral the lope disapears, I assume because the idle increase under load.
Based on stories I will look into doing the mport or FCA, and I will look at the dampner.
Injectors are the last item I want to tackle right, but need this rig to be a good performer seeings how I just got it.
Keep the advice coming!

Also, the muffler is removed and the pipe now exits in front of the tire, I assume that since this was done perhaps more was done but quick visual inspetion hasnt shown any other blatent modifications.
The truck accelerates veyr quickly and seems to have quite a bit of tourqe comapred to my friends 05, it also acts like it wants to drive through the brakes at stop signs, are these indications of perhaps larger injectors or tuning?
It has no extra gauges, no intake, and it does have 275k miles so maybe my 47re is just showing its age?
I am hoping to get into it more this saturday.
Thanks again.

For peace of mind at 275K, I would just go ahead and replace the FCA on the back of the fuel pump, at a little over a hundred bucks. Mine had a slight occasional miss and idle hang. Then it stuck wide open! Scarry. I now carry a new spare under the back seat (along with a u-joint, water pump, fuel filter, belt). At that mileage, if they have not been already changed out, you should start saving for injectors.
Trending Topics
I have heard the symptom of driving through the brakes at a stop is related to the torque converter not unlocking. I would be searching for chafed wiring leading to the trans., and the wires near the AC compressor as well. Do a search and you'll find many accounts of chafed and shorted wiring causing odd intermittent issues.
