Rotella Synthetic Users - a Question...
Does the Rotella Synthetic stink in these 3rd Gens like the conventional Rotella? Just curious.
I'm ready to start using synthetic oil in my truck, and I'm getting tired of waiting for Mobil to get off their derriers and get Mobil1 5w40 into the stores....
And yes, I understand that the Rotella synthetic isn't at the same grade as the Mobil1, but it's closer than regular dino oil.
Thanks guys....

yes it stinks mine is really bad because i have an oilguard bypass filter. the bypass dumps the oil back in on top of the engine so all the extra vapor comes out of the vent tube. but it seems the more miles you put on the oil the less smell.
I ran regular Rotella from the start. It smelled really bad but eventually it wasn't so bad. When I switched over to the synthetic the smell came back. I don't really care though but my wife gags if she rides in the truck immediately after an oil change....
Truckjunkie,
You have an oil manufacturing company in your area called Schaeffer's Oil Co. They make excellent oils at reasonable prices. Their new 9000 series is a very high quality synthetic with a great reputation.
You may want to go over to a website called "bob is the oil guy.com". Do some reading on the Medium Duty Engine Oil forum & on the used diesel oil analysis forum.
Schaeffer's is not a new fly-by-night company. In fact, it's the oldest family owned oil company in the U.S. They started in 1839, building greases for wagon wheels. I understand that a lot of the wagontrains that crossed the country to the West used their greases.
I've heard that their product is quite a bit better than Rotella's Synthetic. I believe it's cheaper, also.

I've noticed the exact same smell from Schaeffer's 9000 as rotella T when I put it in my truck. The smell goes away after a couple hundred miles. I'm guessing they're both using at least one same additive.
The flush in the can is added about 15 minutes before changing oil.Let engine idle only for that 15 minutes. It really just helps oil drain better, cuts it,thins it and maybe some very light disolveing action.I've used it and not used it.No biggy really.
I ran Rottela in my 98 with no smell ever. I decided to start running Rottela synthetic in my new truck last fall(had been running Mopar oil) and it smelled to high heaven. This last go round I couldent find any diesel synthetic but Rottela and it did not smell at all.
