Rattle at low RPM's

I have a rattle mostly at lower rpms. If running along in lower gears with no pull, it is quiet. Touch the fuel a bit or let it off a bit and there is a distinct and quite loud rattle. It seems loudest around 1100 to 1600 rpms. It is annoying and makes it sound like one of the other companies trucks. Anyone else experiencing anything like this? Really makes me proud of my truck when running slowly thru the RV parks. :'( :-[

Bob, Bob, Bob,.....
Did you get the diesel option???
They rattle ya know..... ;D
(couldn't resist)
Mine did it for the first 25k and now it is much quieter. Don't know what has changed. The clutch disc is not rattling now either, and the 6spd shifts like glass. I was figuring the NV5600 has all meshed together and is happy now.

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

I've been getting a little low end rattle also. I crawled around underneath last night hitting things and as far as I can tell it is either the skid plate under the transfer case or the piece of tin along side the fuel tank. I figure after some mug gets packed around them it will go away, but since I've had my new truck it's been pretty dry. Sure could use some rain.

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

We developed a funny little rattle--not very loud--after getting back on the pavement when deer hunting in October. It turned out to be the oil dipstick! Our Dodge mechanic had just been told about this problem by the Dodge rep. Easily fixed. It occurred at about 2000-2200 rpm.

Bob

Its not your imagination, there is a rattle problem with 03 and 04s. The TSB supposedly addressed it for the 03s but my new O4 does it and I have driven 5 other 04s, three of which did it too. My service dealer called Dodge Technical folks and they say a new TSB is coming. Maybe they are blowing smoke at me, but my sales dealer replaced my disc and it made no difference. Peter at South Bend Clutch says it is caused by the springs on the clutch disk that rattle in their cages. He offered to fix it by expanding the springs and would do it for the cost of shipping. Another clutch source says to crimp the holders. I am going to wait a while but one shouldnt have to wait 25K miles to enjoy an otherwise quiet ride of the new 3rd gen engine.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Jack

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

Jack, here's a TSB you might be interested in; is there a difference in the 04's? But I'm not sure thats the rattle Bob was referring to.

Assuming no other changes have occured or nothings broken, have you changed where you purchase your fuel - possibly a higher or lower quality of fuel?

FWIW, mine rattles and knocks louder than usual sometimes and I've never been able to put my finger on why it happens - other than its a diesel.....

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

Chris,
I was aware of that TSB and made my dealer aware of it. Sooooo, we have a nice new clutch. Only one problem - - it still rattles and the new clutch is no where as smooth as the old one. I guess I am ahead in that it is supposed to be a little heavier than the first 03's out.
This rattle is not fuel - - it never changes and has not over all the miles. If anything, it is a little louder like, whatever it is, maybe it is loosening up more. When, whatever it is, gets loose enough to fall off, I will let you know what I lost.
It really is frustrating, though. The truck is so smooth and quiet otherwise. I go through campgrounds with everyone looking at that pretty new white big thing and then hear it sounding like the competitions trucks. Not fun. Somewhere, someone has to stumble onto what is rattling.

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

maybe you should just wait until a 1st or 2cd gen truck goes through. You could follow and they will never hear you. An older PSD would work as well.

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

Bob,

I wasn't going to chime in because I thought my problem was different than yours. But maybe it is the same after all. I've seen that you've gone through the whole happy clutch experience, but from the sounds of your description, the current clutch TSB doesn't fit ("rattle sound when idling in neutral and the clutch pedal is released&quot. I knew that if I pointed my dealer to this TSB, they would follow the instructions by "rote" and fail to hear any rattle. Mine doesn't rattle as described in the TSB. it rattles under load.

Anyway, it sounds to me that JRensel has got it right. When I approached my dealer with this (Petersons/Nampa ID) the service manager thought it was "normal gear lash" in the transmission. However, consistent with JRensel's experience, the service manager drove several 03s and 04s on his lot and they all do it. I'm starting to think that the clutch is at fault after all.

I notice mine running empty 'cause I don't tow (yet). lower RPMS as you describe, and moderate power. Seems to be a resonance of some sort that peaks under certain conditions and then dissapears. I can't make my rattle "stay on" for any length of time. Is yours constant under moderate loads when you are cruising around the campground at low speeds? Can you re-produce the rattle when driving empty?

Peter knows what he's talking about and maybe he's right. If so, the dealer won't be able to fix the clutch because all they can do is change out the part for another like it. What we need here is someone to upgrade to an SBC OFE or something, and tell us if the rattle goes away. I wish i could get Peter to hear my truck or yours - I bet he would tell us right away if the rattle is clutch springs or not.

Re:Rattle at low RPM's

After reading Dougs post, I had this epiphany - mine's always had that rattle all along. As far as when I "have" it, I only really notice it idling/cruising thru parking lots. Its never bothered me before. Only while idling along, never heard it upon throttle.

In fact, it can be so loud, I have used it to clear folks out of the way (worked like a charm in Mahattan). But it can inadvertently alarm folks too - one time a father swooped over to his small boy and picked him up (thinking I was going to run someone over I think) then glared at me as I idled by giving him the “what can I say?” look. I can re-create it any time you ask – just as long as idling in gear is consistent to safe driving. Just ride the brakes a bit. I can also use to signal my arrival in the neighborhood while everyone waves as they hear me coming through (certainly isn't because of the loud engine rattling going on...).

Yeah, mines rattled since I picked it up two Octobers ago. I’ve always thought it to be normal gear lash. My little ole Nissan PU used to do the same thing but not on the same scale. Its not the clutch, not the dipstick, nor heat shields on exhaust pipes. I chalked it off to "having a diesel". Haven't lost a moments of sleep and am not even worried about it.

I think I had one of those epiphany's one time. Right in the middle of my first firefight I noticed that I had piphed in my pants. ;D
