The Cummings I'm not so sure about.....the Cummins on the other hand....no, none are required to my knowledge. My dads old IDI Ford had a bad problem with electrolysis eating pinholes in every cylinder wall which made for a nasty rebuild, which is why Ford diesels, at least the older ones, should be required to run an additive. My 03 Cummins has 300k on it and all I've ever done to the cooling system is a routine flush and refill with "distilled water" and coolant. Every drain the coolant is as clear as the day it went in....and no crud built up inside radiator that I can see either.

No! The G-05 HOAT coolant specd. for the 5.9 CTD is fully formulated and requires no additional additives during it's 5 year/100,000 mi. service life for the factory fill or 5 year/150,000 mi. interval for the ZEREX G-05 coolants.

i think if you use the proper coolant made for the dodge cummins engine
HOAT rated
Zerex GO5 and Fleetguard GO5 or the mopar coolant

you should be good to go, I bought the Zerex GO5 at NAPA.

i changed the coolant in my 2005 this fall, truck had 50K miles, coolant looked good and clean and that is what you want when it comes out, not dirty and rusty.

coolant may have been good, but you want the additives that are in the coolant restored. I also installed a new thermostat.

Fleetguard does not offer a G-05 formulated HOAT coolant at this time. My findings indicate that their offerings are OAT or Organic Acid Technlogy formulations.

I've been using FG ES Complete blue for years in 2 different trucks with nothing short of great results. I didn't even realize it's not hoat til a couple of weeks ago when I did a search on FG coolants. It looks like the ESC blue might just be plain EG with an additive that can be kept up and their oat is healthier coolant and recommended for HD diesels... from what I got out of the FG site. What's so important or better about using hoat? Cummins RM recommended the ESC blue. Craig

Dr.
I guess i miss spoke on the Fleetguard coolant, could not find where i got that Fleetguard coolant was HOAT approved and recommended for dodge cummins engines.
But, you are right, Fleetgurad is not HOAT rated,

Maybe HOAT is just a Dodge requirement.

Do not know for sure if HOAT is required for all cummins engines.

I used the Zerex GO5 from NAPA and it did say it was HOAT rated.

There is nothing required if you use the recommended type of fluid.

But, based on actual data (not sales pitch) and my race car experiance, I add a surfactant to all my water cooled vehicles. Most of the time I use Royal Purple's "Blue Ice". But Redlines "Water Wetter" seems to work just as well.
