I got to call you on that one. While I agree prefilling is a good thing the engine is not running without oil for another "30-40 seconds". Maybe 2 seconds, and the oil passages still have oil in them that is forced out and into service by the air. It not worth arguing about, but we do need to be realistic about it.

Thousands upon thousands of vehicles daily get a oil and filter and not squat prefilled. The only I time in 25 plus years in auto service I've ever done or seen it done was/is with a fresh motor/rebuild etc.AND that is when the oil filter is not sitting sideways on a engine.Nothing to do with CREATING more work etc.its just the way it is.

With a filter this size, and tha fact that it installs verticaly...it just makes sence to prefill.

I realy doubt that the filter is filled with oil in 2 secs when not prefilled.. Be serious.

My wifes Saturn has an oil filter the size of a shot glass. that one i do NOT prefill. Plus it installs SIDEWAYS.

Well, I thought I was being serious, but you called me on it. If, like you say it takes 40 seconds to fill an oil filter then take your filter off and let the engine run for 40 seconds without it. My guess is you will have pumped most if not all of the oil in the pan on the ground, or to be fair and not ruin an engine, let it run for 2 seconds. I'll bet you'll have close to quart of oil on the ground.

It by no means takes 40 seconds to build oil psi on a oil & filter change and no prefill.I bet 3 to 5 seconds.40 seconds on a rebuild maybe and that seems a long time.

So much for a quick question.

Those of you with more important things in life to do than prefill go ahead and do them and skip the prefill.

Those of you who have an extra minute of two in your life to give just a little extra love to that $6000 option under the hood....prefill.

What Handy said.
These are not gasoline engines, compression much higher, need slick cushion to dampen hammer thump. Wonder why pre-lube systems were made for diesels? More reasons to change oil yourself and do it right.
