questions for transmission guys please help!!!

i have an 05 2500 with a 48re in it. I pull a 14k trailer almost daily. I have a pacbrake ex brake and controller. My problem is I had the trans built shortly after installing the pac brake which was 20k ago and I now have to pull it and have it fixed. I service it 2 times within the 20k. Both times it has worn out the 2nd gear band. Is my problem the pac brake the heavy towing or bad tranny guy? the tranny had a shift kit, new bands, clutches, triple loc tc. I was told it would hold up no problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to decipher if I should be trading out of this truck into 1 with a 6sp manual. Or can i make this tranny work right long term. thanks

If your wearing out the band that much you need to find a different trans guy or tell this one to get with it.

The second gear band is only applied in 2nd. That means you are slipping it on the upshift and that should not be happening on a correctly built trans, or, you are slipping on the downshift and EB apply. That should not happen either if arrangements have been made for the TV pressure on the 05.

There is a heavier band for it but unless the trans is built correctly it will make little difference. Stock band will take a lot if things are set up correctly.

he built it up with the heavier band. I barely if ever use the eb in 2nd gear, mostly 3 or 4. he built his and many other 48re trans with much luck. I know i use it hard for work but is 20 k a really short life for a hard working tranny? stock lasted 40k! what do i need to be telling him or asking him to look at. You mentioned tv pressure. He was supposed to have turned up the line pressure when doing shift kit does this sound correct? Thanks

one other thing is i had the dealer change the tow haul settings to overdrive off. does this in any way mess up the shifting and line pressures seeing as tow haul used to up these.

I missed the Tow Loc in your sig, that should take care of the TV pressure.

Flashing the computer to OD off just takes away the more aggressive lockup and shift pattern. It doesn't reduce line pressure.

If the band is wearing out its slipping for some reason. Might take a look at the servo for leakage both around the cover and around the piston. Thats a trouble spot on these transmissions.

Have any idea how much weight you are grossing?

Sounds like your tranny guy just isn't with it. Though, if I was towing 14k almost daily than I would probably opt for the 6 speed manual, you'll get much more control over the load.

the bd tow loc never made it on as there were way too many wires to splice in. I don't need any more reasons for this truck to not run. It has a lock up thet came as part of the pac brake and was made for them by BD or some other big name trans co. Unfortunately in 05 we could not get 6sp man in mass, emitions reasons. yes i would love 6sp man but with the trans built and the pac brake this truck is a towing beast no issues other than the 2nd gear band.

used to gross over 26k when the quarry did not have a scale, I like to be safe and legit and now i gross 23ish. Sometimes 2 times a day some days no towing even some weeks. It just seems when i really need the truck it fails on me. Usually small stuff but you cant even get parts for these trucks in a timely manor. !.5 mo for a trans cooler line, crazy. But anyway my problems should be sorted out if the trans guy does his job right, yes!

Once is coincidence, twice is a trend. From my experience there is a problem with 2nd gear for some reason.

Not sure if you have the hemi band and upgraded drum but it might be worth the dollars since your seems problematic.

Are you by chance spending a lot of time in 2nd when loaded? Maneuvering and low speed use? The stock band is all right for shifting thru the gears but if you are actually using 2nd gear a lot I would opt for the hemi band and upgrade the front servo with billet piston and cover.

Even grossing 24k you should not be having that kind of problem with the band. If you were at 30k all the time I could see the issues but 23-24 is well within the capability if the trans is setup correctly.
