Transmission Guys-Please Respond
Transmission Guys-Please Respond
Sorry for the length on this. Be patient with me.
I bought my truck from my father April 2005. Before I bought it he had the transmission re-built by an independent shop in Wisconsin. 108,000 miles on the truck when I got it. 2 year warranty on the re-build. Several months after I got it while driving and holding the gas pedal steady(somwhere between 25-30 mph) between 2nd and 3rd gear it would shift back and forth quickly between those 2 gears unless I sped up and let it shift solidly into 3rd or slowed down enough to let it drop back comfortably into 2nd. It did this intermittently without any real pattern to it, i.e. sometimes it did it sometimes it didn't ususally mostly while climbing hills . I live in North Carolina, took it to an independent transmission shop here. They replaced the valve body and flashed the computer, shop in Wisconsin payed up. The problem wasn't solved by this fix. I traded the truck back to my father so he could take it back to the original shop. Supposedly they replaced the transmission with a new one. I got it back and soon after had the same problem except between different gears. Have had it at the dealer for some other service and I told them about it and they flashed the computer too just like the first 2 shops did. Now truck has 140,000+ and the problem seems to have gotten worse. Now with overdrive on it does it in the 40-50 mph range between I guess 4 or 5th and overdrive and if I turn off overdrive it does it again between 20-30 mph. Now it does it whenever I drive it period.
The original shop said it must be an electrical problem, maybe "electrical noise" interfering with the computer caused by poor ground connections or something. The dealer never heard of such a thing or else they never considered it because I believe they thought their computer flashing thing worked. I took it to yet another indy shop, the guy worked for the local Dodge dealer for like 15-20 years. He also said the first place to start is to see if it is bad ground connections causing "electrical noise". I thought the first shop was crazy for suggesting this but now another transmission guy has suggested it. I did replace the alternator with a re-man one last summer. I understand an alternator can be the cause of electrical noise. But this problem didn't seem to be much changed or exesperated by the new alternator. I'm a building contractor by trade and my mechanical knowledge is somewhat limited on these new fangled vehicles but I'm tired of relying on just 1 or 2 ideas about this problem. And what is the deal with all of this computer flashing stuff, what does any of that do for my truck? Please Help!

Thanks Truckman - Please a little more help
Thank you for the link. I'm not sure if TallTom will respond to this but I was wondering if you could point me towards my APPS. According to the thread it is on the drivers side near the front of the engine. I do see the large fuse box and then moving towards the cab there is some brake plumbing and then a smaller plastic box. Is it that or is it front of all that toward the bumper? Also, from the thread, what is TPS? Last thing, hook the ground wire to red or black on the battery? If it's seems like I'm not undertsanding something about how to do the suggested fix please feel free to educate me.
Use the search on this site for your answers,, Just click on the search button above and type in your question or just one word,, Like APPS,
Which stands for Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor,,, Would have been WAY TO EASY to use TPS,,,Throttle Position Sensor.. haha.

Hi I hate to hear you are having the same problems with shifting that I was. You were asking about the aps rewire fix. Go to google or your favorite search engine and type Sun Coast Converters 24 Valve APPS Rewire Ground Instructions
It will take you to the pdf file explaining how to do the rewire job. Good luck it helped mine for a while and I ended up reguilding my alternator. You mentioned you replaced yours with a rebuilt unit. If they didn't change out the rectifier in your rebuilt one it still could be the cause of your problems.
I believe my problem started after I grounded out my channel locks against the alternator trying to remove my oil filter.
From what I have been told that I burned out a diaode in the rectifier board which created my electrical noise.
To make a long story short I watched the guy rebuild my alternator and insisted that he change out the rectifier while doing the rebuild.
It cured my problems.
Good Luck

I hope you have your fix by now, but I will send you my experience and fix anyway. Maybe it will help if you are still experiencing the problems. I had the same problem related to electrical noise from the alternator to the APPS,
causing the torgue converter to lock and unlock at about 30MPH with overdrive off and at 50 MPH in overdrive.
Living a retired life in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico it is pretty hard to find a Dodge dealer with the stuff to do a proper fix, so I have to do lots of research when I have problems with my 1999 dually. First I tried disconnecting the batteries for 30 minutes and reconnecting to allow the PCM to relearn the settings, as suggested on a web page. This would work for about two days. With further internet research I learn about using a filter on the APPS wire to remove the interference caused by the breakdown in diodes of the alternator, which was causing this RF noise. My buddy here in PV is a marine electronics tech, so he offered me a radar ferrite filter design to fiter RF to and from other electronics when operating the radar. This ferrite filter clipped on over the wire harness coming from the APPS without cutting any wires. It was installed in two minutes, but we again disconected the batteries for 30 minutes, reconnected to allow the ECM and PCM to relearn all settings. I have not experienced this problem again in three years.
Just another suggestion, but I hope you have your problem fixed by now.

you know i have had that problem with my truck also. I do have a the p0123 code going off and also another code some ppl have told me to reset the APPS and i did that and it worked for about 2 days or so now they are telling me to adjust my APPS and i have not done that yet. I hope that fixes it. I hope you get your fixed let me know what you did to fix it.

Hey tonycamacho,
I'd like to try this. I am a little nervous about cutting wires. I did a Google search for radar ferrite filters and didn't really find anything that seemed like the right thing. I did a search for clamp on ferrite filters and found some sites that offer them for use on computers and TV's, etc. Will those kind work? Would more than one be useful on the APPS wire harness? Your feedback is much appreciated.
