Question for the Amsoil guys?
I run Amsoil in my 07 for 10,000 miles. I change the filter at 5,000 and top a quart. Is it safe to run 15,000 for light duty use while changing the filter every 5,000? The reason I ask, is that it costs me $180.00 for a full oil change and I don't want to throw away good oil at that cost.
Your best answer is a used oil analysis (UOA) sample to Blackstone or other lab. Without, it would be a guess at best. It may go the distance but personnally I wouldn't consider that long an interval without testing. The 10,000 probably isn't a big deal but a test would still be a good idea to check how much life is left.
you determine the oil change interval by oil analysis. if you will use a lf16035 filter you can go 15,000 miles between filter change with a 100% safety factor. for your truck the determining factor on oil change will be the soot loading the bd helps a little. i would test at 20,000 and every 4,000 miles there after until you find the interval. because of the soot i think you will be between 30,000 and 35,000 once you find it i would split it in half and use this as the mid term filter change
I've run Amsoil 15w-40 HD Diesel and Marine in the 7.3 in an 01' Ford Excursion for about 11k miles per year over the last 2 years and both UOA's have come back fine. With you changing the filter every 5k I think you'll be more than fine, though the UOA will tell you for sure. The best way to run Amsoil is in sync with a bypass filter. That will remove the most contaminants and allow you to run the oil the longest in the safest manor.
here is what i did, i ran 15/40 in the summer, and 5/30 hd diesel in the winter.depending on how many kms i put on which is roughly 80,000 to 100,000kms
i use to chjange out my oil filter every 10,000kms, and top up, do this 3 times, then drop the oil, half way through draining i take a small oil sample and send it off. my truck had 400,000kms, when i lost it to a fire, it was a good strong runner, lots of mods.
my oil samples always came back good to keep in service, but for the peace of mind i used to just change it out.

I've gone 366 days/7K using Amsoil 5w30 HDD along with a Fleetguard Stratapore LF16035 oil filter. My oil reports have came back great with a TBN of no less then 10.03 so I'm sure you can go longer then 5k when using a FS16035 filter but take an oil sample then send it in to be tested just to be safe being you are adding power with your BD Triple Dog. Are you paying retail price for your oil being it cost you $180.? The 5w30 cost me ( it's higher priced then 15w40) with oil filter and paying to have it installed plus sales tax around $145.00.

I got 20K miles out of my last oil before the soot got too high for my liking, thou was told I could go longer.
Its amazing how many people spend the money on the oil, but not the filters. Their filters are the best full-flow you can buy, 15um absolute and rated for 25K miles.

180 for an oil change? Just save your self some money and run Rotella T. I change my oil and filter every 9k. Haven't had any issues. Don't plan on paying for the Amsoil name if what I run is doing the job.
$163 to the door, dealer pricing. That is 3.5 gallons of the AME 15w-40, the full flow filter and the bypass filter. Add the cost of three UOA's ($69) for a total of $232. Now that would cover 7 standard oil filter changes. Unless the cost of a standard 3K mile oil change is less than $33 bucks the amsoil is cheaper. Same goes for your Rotella. What does 1 change cost? And how do you know its doing the job? Are you doing UOA? Do you have a bypass filter? What filter do you use? Amsoil is the best stuff, IMHO, out there from the oil to the filters.. and when you compare it to a 3K miles change its cheaper too.
I know it's doing the job because every diesel my family has ever owned, both auto and tractors don't use any different oil, and they are still trucking along. AMSOIL is nothing more than hype. Anyone can become a "dealer" that's the only reason that it sells. There is a VERY small amount of actual oil manufactures in the US, AMSOIL is not one of them. There is nothing special about their oil. They put their own little blend of extra additives in the oil and call it special.
Do what you wish, but that money could be spent elsewhere.

When I had my '92 D-350, I was using 15w-40 Rotella conventional oil. I race a lot and my travels take me through many of the same routes. When I switched to Amsoil 15w-40 synthetic, my mileage went up by at least .5 and water temps were obviously down while towing. The OEM gauge isn't the best measuring tool, but it was obvious where the needle settled before and after the change, fully warmed up cruising at 70 mph.
I got my 2004.5 when it had 5,400 miles on it and switched to Amsoil synthetics around 10-15,000. I can't say how much it helped then because the truck continued to get better mileage to almost 30,000! I always read that it took a while for a Cummins to break-in, especially if you were easy on it!
I've had and heard of too many instances of less wear and faster elapsed times with race engines, transmissions and differentials using Amsoil compared to conventional brands. I'm not saying that the other oils are "bad". I've run other brands many years ago before switching, without problems. It's just that all oils are NOT created equal and Amsoil does provide a higher level of insurance/durability. It boils down to a matter of preferance - if you want and/or need that extra level..
