Pyro Install Paranoia
Pyro Install Paranoia
Well, about 3 weeks ago I installed the pyrometer for my EGT gauge (Edge Juice w/ Attitude monitor). I was going to drop turbo and then drill and tap in order to be really safe. However, I couldn't get enough leverage to break lose the turbo mounting bolts. Therefore, I installed the pyro on the horizontal section of the exhaust manifold just in front of the "Y" around cylinder 3. I could then remove all excess shavings that fell into the manifold using a pencil magnet.
After I drilled and tapped, I started truck and ran for a few minutes to let any extra shavings blow out the pyro hole. I then installed pyro. At times after installation, I here ticking. It comes and goes and then dissipates really quickly. I was concerned about the condition of the turbo so I pulled air intake and checked for slop, etc. There was absolutely no endplay (front to back movement). However, there does seem to be some slop (side to side). I checked manual and 0.50 mm was MAX for side to side movement. I couldn't get feeler gauges into the turbo but it looks like I am somewhere around this MAX value. The housing of the turbo has no witness marks or any other signs of impeller contact. However, there is a small stress crack on one of the impeller blades (judging from manual, this appears to be normal).
I crawled under the truck to try and trace ticking sound (ticking comes and goes but for the most part, can never be heard). It seems like the majority of the time I can hear it is after startup. I am only using the rear exhaust hanger on my exhaust (straight pipe, no kitty, w/ 40 donaldson muffler). Exhaust seems to vibrate alot. When I apply pressure to the exhaust (when running), the sound seems to dissipate.
What do I have going on? Is the turbo on its way out from possible shaving or metal hair? Do I just need to add another exhaust hanger? What would the turbo sound like or what would performance be like if side to side play was excessive on the compressor impeller?
Performance is great and truck is good and smooth when making 30 psi boost.
Any ideas on what this ticking sound is?
Thanks in advance.
I also wanted to add that I probably have 1500 miles on the truck after pyro install. Once again, ticking is very periodic and does not happen often. If there was a problem w/ turbo, would I be hearing this more often?
One more thing to note, if exhaust/ muffler related - I am using u-bolt clamps for exhaust (donaldson muffler has reliefs cut into both inlet and outlet) - I wonder if I just might have exhaust leak at this area?

whenever i had johnny genius, cut out my muffler and weld in another piece of 4" he didnt get it lined back up right so it vibrates. it was really bad when i put the jake on, but since has gotten better. you cant even hear it now...i guess it just settled in to where it wont make such the racket anymore

Could be a leak around the threads for the pryo sender that seals up once the exhaust manifold expands. A lot of folks make the mistake of running the NPT taps all the way in. This makes for a loose connection. It is a tapered fit. I only run them in until there is still about .250 of the cutters showing. I also slathered a good amount of high temp anti-seize on the threads when I installed mine.
I would also recommend you put a couple of more hangers on the exhaust system that is a lot of weight hanging on one hanger and the turbo elbow.

I am not sure if it is injectors ticking or not. I would think that when I put it back to stock tuning then I wouldn't here the injectors anymore, correct?
Also, is there any coincidence that I didn't begin to hear this until after install of pyro? I did not use anti-seize when I installed pyro, but I am very confident I didn't tap too far. Maybe I have a leak at the pyro?
And you're right, I need to go ahead and add a few hangers under there. I am just speculating that it may be exhaust related - not 100% sure though.
Just out of curiosity, if it was turbo problems, what type of sounds, performance, etc would I expect to have. Would it be constant sound or random/ periodic?
Thanks again.

for future reference. if the turbo bolts wont come off, get a box wrench, propane torch, and a bottle of kroil or pb blaster. use the torch to warm the nut, when it is good and warm, squirt the oil into the threads, a few times of heat/cool with wrench pressure, and they will come right off.

sweet, nice technique. Do the threads on the stud/nut get trashed?
I`d imagine the stud breaks off occasionally too?
