LIFT PUMP PARANOIA
LIFT PUMP PARANOIA
I am a new diesel owner, 2002 6spd H.O., and all of these lift pump threads have really got me paranoid. I have a few quick questions. First, if the lift pump goes out, and ruins the injector pump due to lack of fuel pressure, will Cummins cover the injector pump under the 5yr/100k engine warranty? My second and final question is where do I check the pressure coming out of my lift pump and what should it be. I have a fuel pressure gauge I use to check injector rails on gas engines. It screws directly to a Schrader valve. Will this gauge work? ??? Thanks for the help and thumbs up to DTR!!!
Re:LIFT PUMP PARANOIA
Congrats on the new truck. If your lp goes out and takes the ip it will be covered. That is if you don't have any mods. There is a schrader valve on the side of the injection pump. It is the same as a 4 jic. I use a old r-12 ac line and guage to check mine.
Ideal pressures are
idle-15
wot- no less than 6 or 8 I think
Right now mine is
idle-13 ;D
wot-6

Re:LIFT PUMP PARANOIA
thanks for the help. going to try and check the pressure tomorrow. don't know if i will be able to check the WOT but i can surely check the idel pressures. thanks

Coyote556
First thing in preventing damage from a weak lift pump is to monitor pressure. If you don't go with an in cab set up, at the very least get a test gauge setup, with 5' hose, so you can check psi under load and full throttle. Some trucks run just fine with an almost dead lp, until the vp44 goes south. Monitor your pressures and you will now when it time for a new.
my nickel worth
Re:LIFT PUMP PARANOIA
You can buy a in-cab fuel pressure gauge very reasonable and set up on your a-pillar, their easy to hook up (and look nice too) then you can always monitor it, you my-as-well get a three gauge holder because a month on this site and you'll be buying more gauges anyway ( you'll see ) anyway good luck w/ your new truck!
call rod @ wildcat diesel, he did right by me ( in the links section under high perf.)

VP44s are too difficult to find and too expensive to replace to not take five minutes to check pressures.

Rod

Re:LIFT PUMP PARANOIA
well, my paranoia was not warranted. i checked my idle lift pump pressure today and it was between 15-16. from what i have been reading, this means i am good to go.
