Purchase advice
Hello all, I'm in the market for another truck and don't know much about anything with more than 12 valves (other than I don't want a VP). My question is: which common rail engines have the least amount of emission stuff on them? I've heard the 03-early 04 are the way to go. Is there a different 8th digit engine code in the VIN to look for? Any problems to look for, like front ends on the old ones, KDP, 5th gear nuts, etc? I don't care if it's a 3500 or 2500, just don't want/need a dually.
Thanks in advance for any help, cd

The 03-04.5 HO (305 hp on the tag) don't have a cat.
I don't think there is really anything equivelent to a KDP type problem.
Some 03's had an alternator bracket made out of sheet steel that were prone to crack. There was also an updated power steering hose, the pressure line that runs to the hydro boost, that got a weight and restriction in the middle of the run to cure a buzz or vibration right at 2000 RPM.

I would be looking at '05 or '06. You can remove the Cat no problem. The only thing that I would update on either of those is the steering hardware. Dodge has an upgrade that is almost like www.thurenfabrication.com Either one will work great. I think '05 has the nicer interior or atleast more comfortable. Just my .02
