I would def. be afraid to do that as a perm solution. Maybe as a temp solution until I could could the part ordered in.

Temp solution...

I would use the rail pressure capping as a temp. solution, or a temp. way to diagnose the problem. I would unhook your pressure box too if you have one on it. With my Edge EZ I would see 26K and some change psi on my rail pressure gauge.

26,000 ok thanks but ive read the factory relief is set at 30,000 anyone know if this is true if you have a gauge i would think it would build really quick then when reaching the point of the relief [if poss.] then your press. should take a big dive, any one seen this if so at what press. does this make sense to any one but me?

Ok... back from some more testing...

We've come to the conclusion, after doing every test we could find to do, that we've got a bad #3 injector. We got our hands on a infared thermometer... #3 had a -50 degree difference than the rest of em....

so question: will injectors from an 04 fit in his 03??

I believe they will as long as they are from an early 04 with the 305hp 555 cummins. 04.5 switched to the 325hp 600 cummins, and I believe the injectors were different. I was going to sugjest checking the fuel filter. I clogged filter will cause the same slow start/ no start problems.

Kino... Thanks for the info... Yeah we've changed the fuel filter, no change. Turns out the injectors we found were for a 05... so why wont these work?? are they a different size?? i figured they fit in the same head, but i'm not sure.

I believe that I heard that it was just a difference in the nozzle. The body would be the same. Maybe different spray pattern. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) tells the injector how long and when to spray, so I don't know if you'd see any noticeable difference in performance by changing out 1 injector. Don't hold me to the fire on this, but I've been doing a lot of research. - curtis

people dont for some reason want to comment to my questions regarding this for some reason, thought we were all talking out our issues and what we have and have not tried to come up with a solution.ive replaced these parts that some are removing cleaning and reinstalling, were all after the same result the quick starting cummins that thier suppose to be!

well we picked up the injectors.. came with the rail and all the lines also. Took a 03 injector and put it next to the 05... couldn't tell any difference at all. so we'll install em after work and see how she runs... report back tomorrow.

Ok, we replaced the bad #3 injector with an 05 injector.... no worky. So we're gonna take the 05's back.

On another note, i cleaned the original #3 injector out with carb cleaner, installed it, kicked the key on and let the LP run out, and it cranked right up. Checked the temp at the exhaust ports, they're all within 15-20 deg of each other. It's started great 10 times so far... so we'll see...

So, my conclusion, 05 injectors will NOT work in an 03, even tho they look exactly the same. To get it to even idle, you've got to be WOT.

cwood.. its a breeze. 3/4" wrench for the lines, 10mm for the line hold-downs,15/16" socket for the injector backing nuts. injectors come right out. It took me and my buddy two beers a piece, so not bad at all! I used a shallow 15/16 for the injectors as a deep socket will hit the rail....

overall time:

removing injector #3 and replacing with 05 injector - 30min

removing 05 injector and cleaning/replacing original #3 injector - 45mins

1 beer and smoke break - 45mins

total: 2hrs
