Clutch pressure relief valve

Can someone please explain to me how this works? The valve is the metal can below the clutch cylinder. This is apparently what is causing the clicking or popping sound/feeling in the clutch pedal intermittently. Its like every 5th engagement or so. Dealer says this is normal and valve is actuating to relieve pressure. The tech had never seen one and said it was new.

I know my pedal made a heck of a clicking sound when I first got the truck. After a couple of weeks, it quit so I didnt concern myself with it. Maybe thats what was clicking?

Someone has to know how this works or maybe at least which years it is on. I've had hydraulic clutches before but never heard of this.

This must be new for the '05 models? Don't think mine has this.

Any Dodge techs or knowledgable folks care to comment about this valve?

The item in the photo is not a pressure relief valve and the tech who looked at it must not be very experienced as that is definitly a clutch hydraulic damper. It simply takes pulastions, vibrations and other things you don't want to feel at the pedal and reduces them. On many cars that use them, the clutch systems can be a pain in **** to bleed ( not that we can do that on ours! ). If that is the item that is making the noise then I would say it is not normal unless it has always done it (mine doesn't). I would also check to make sure it isn't coming from your clitch pedal bushings and pivot or even from the master cylinder (clutch) directly...either way thought the whole hydraulic system has to be replaced as a unit if you need to replace anything in it. Clutch systems should not have any more 'pressure' in the system then it takes to compress the spring mechanism in the pressure plate, so to 'relieve' pressure would mean that there is not enough movement in the slave cylinder to disengage the clutch disc. Brakes are different because the piston in the caliper (slave cylinder) is pressing against something solid (rotor/pads) and causing resistance, the more resisance means higher pressure which means extra push from foot. A clutch works opposite where when you press pedal all you are doing is providing enough pressure to compress springs in pressure plate and cause clutch disc to not be clamped by springs against flywheel...so the onl resistance is the compression of springs...not something solid like a rotor and therefore there is no reason to 'relieve' pressure.

For anyone I confused, there might be some simplicity in how a clutch operates here: How a clutch works
