power steering pump

i am not sure if my power steering pump is going out on me, but i have read some where that some people have cleaned them out , and they get good results doing this.
io was wondering what do do to clean out the pump, how to doing, what is needed, before i go and replace a pump that still might be good.
i guess i should explain why i am thinking this. it is more noticable when towing, but i can steer the truck, no problems, but on return, the steering wheel feels jerrky, like a tow motor type steering, where it is not smooth any more, and feels like a hydrlic cylinder.i noticed today that the fluid was pretty dark in colour.

I just got done with this job. Refilled with synthetic fluid and it turns very smooth. My symptoms where not quite the same as yours, I had a groaning sound and vibration when I turned the wheel. I did mine with the pump out of the truck since I was changing the seals on the vacuum pump and it was real simple. You may be able to do this without removing the PS pump, just remove the pressure line and you'll then need a 1" socket to remove the bolt holding in the filter.

Has anyone cleaned the filter on 2003-2007 PS pumps? Just wondering if it's the same/similar to the 2002-earlier pumps.

Thanks.

Totally different pump. Don't know what they were cleaning. I have had good luck just flushing the system and putting in ATF+4. Seems to be a good fix on most of the DC vehicles I have worked on.

I have a 2005 HPCR Cummins out of a Dodge in my truck with all of the Dodge accessories. I checked the PS pump and it doesn't look like any of those options will work. I will investigate further.

The systems sounds just like mine did but it cleared up. It was not the pump but a u-joint on the axel.

I am in the process getting everything together that I will need and will replace both u-joints next week.
