Question Possible CP3 leaking-Have some ?'s

I was changing my oil, filter and fuel filter today and while I was under the truck greasing it and looking around checking things out I happened to notice that the bottom of the CP3 looked wet or damp as well as the mounting bracket for the power steering pump. I wiped it with my finger and got a very light oily film on my finger and didn't seem to have a strong odor of diesel fuel but seemed like diesel by the way it felt on my finger. I looked further and found no obvious signs of any leaks and the top of the CP3 is clean and dry. I looked all over the steering pump and that seems dry and the res is where it is suppose be as far as oil volume is concerned. If the CP3is leaking, it seems to be coming from between the engine and the pump itself, is this possible?

I know that these things can and do leak and was wondering where the most common area was for leaks are? The truck has 25K on it and only about 5K with a power adder installed Also will the pump seep under high pressure but not leak all of the time? I use to run a XZT box and could see 26-27K rail pressure under hard acceleration but would not happen very often, maybe 5-6times during it's usage. I have since switched to the smarty Jr and pressures are no where near that anymore.

I know that if I brought it into the dealer they would not find anything wrong because the leak seems to be more like a seep and is very hard to see, no fuel dripping or pooling of any sort. What should I expect to see in the future or am I over-reacting? Should I bring it in to the dealer anyway to be checked out? Any and all information will be appreciated.

The cp3 is known to leak in extreme temperature variances. With the temps you had a week ago......my 06 just started to leak also, I'am located just west of you.

My 05 leaked a couple of years ago also, fixed under warranty.

Use the search engine on this site - it's very handy...

In the meantime - read these threads:

I once thought my cp3 was leaking but it turned out to be coming from an injector line on top of the rail. Snugged up some of the fittings and have been good to go for over a year now...

After doing some research on here and speaking with a few people I trust around here it sounds that it is normal with the big temp changes we have had around here lately and should be fine once the temps warm up in the spring. Thanks for the help.

My original CP3 was replaced when it started leaking 2 years ago. Recently, this one has started, but only off and on, and only when VERY cold. I'm not going to bother having this one replaced unless it gets very bad.

It was a fight to get the original one replaced, so I'm just going to monitor it for now.

Serp belts and CP3s - seems to be the Achilles heels on these trucks.

My CP3 leaked at 25k, diesel was comming out from between the 2 halves of the pump. I watched the tech check it from underneath, I reved the motor up to 2500 and he looked at the pump. He stated that if it leaked at the higher rpm's it needed to be replaced. No issues what so ever with getting them to replace it. Sounds like you could/should check it.

BTW no big changes in outside temp when it went.
