My CP3 is leaking!
Hey guys,
I have noticed after shuting my truck off that it smells like raw diesel... Usually I can smell it comming from the front of the truck through the grill with the warm air radiating off the engine. There haven't been any drips on the ground, and looking at the cp3 and lines I couldn't see anything wet. I just got the oil changed yesterday and took a peek under the engine while it was on the lift. Everything below the CP3 is wet, all the way down to the oil pan. I cant see where its comming from looking down from above in the engine compartment though. Looking up from under the truck with a flashlight, I couldn't make out where it was comming from either. Is there a fitting on the bottom of the pump that leaks commonly? Is there another place on the pump that has been known to spring a leak that I should look at? I'm thinking this is why my mileage SUCKS! Any suggestions would be great.

Do a search on this site and you'll find several comments about this issue. If you're in a colder climate this shows up more frequently. Evidently someone at Bosch (I think that's who makes them) decided that two different types of metal could be easily assembled to make a CP3 pump. I guess the QA guys were out that day or something, because the two different metals heat and cool at different rates, and the stock gaskets can't keep up, and you get a leak.
I was lucky and got mine replaced with a rebuilt unit that (I guess) had the new gaskets that can handle the issue. I took it to the dealership and told them of the problem - they verified it and replaced it, but tried to charge me a $100 deductible because my truck was out of the 36K mile bumper to bumper warranty. This replacement is covered under the Cummins 100K mile warranty, for which there is no deductible for the first 5 years - at least that's my recollection - you'll need to check your owner's manual to make sure.
After the deer in the headlights look I got from the Service Writer and the Service Manager, they waived the $100 deductible and I was on my way. I've been through two winters since then with no problems, knock on wood.
I have heard that Dodge has lately decided that fuel has to be pouring out of the thing before they'll replace it now, and that seepage is acceptable (!). Wait for others to chime in on this, use the search engine, and talk to your dealer if you have a good rapport with them. Good luck...
ON EDIT - judging by your signature, unless you had a bunch of your mods installed by your dealer, or the Service Writer and Mechanic were groomsmen at your wedding, I'm assuming they'll say that the leaking CP3 was due to your mods - right or wrong, I'm guessing that's what you're gonna hear. Maybe it's time for one of those 'modded' CP3's that I see advertised here once in a while - just make sure they have the improved gaskets. Again, good luck...

Thanks for the suggestion... I'll call up the dealer and find out. They are pretty cool with mods as long as you dont go crazy with turbo/injectors or stacked boxes. I have a pressure box on there now but I can remove that easily. The only downloader I have used is a smarty so my key counter is showing what it should for 44k miles.
