Play in clutch release lever?

I've been fighting an engagement problem for roughly 20K miles. Normal engagement is fairly jerky, and in the middle of the pedal range like normal. From time to time, it'll engage near the floor, and be butter smooth. I talked to Valair, and they asked me to pull the slave cylinder off and see if there was any movement in the release lever. When I pulled the slave, I found no play front to back, and about 1/4" up and down.
As the repair manual doesn't do any linkage diagnosis outside the bearings, I'm at a loss as to whether this is normal or not...does anybody know if this is within tolerance, or would cause engagement chatter?

Thanks,

Adam

Anybody? I've never pulled a 5600, so I don't know what's normal and what's not...
