clutch would not release

On my 1998 12v, I was driving down the highway and went to shift to 4th, did not want to shift, pulled a little harder then shifter broke, pulled over to find that clutch was not totaly coming off, good pedal feel, lots of fluid, no leaks anywhere, put vice grips on shifter stub and started in 2nd and drove to town by power shifting, which part would fail more slave cyl or master?
I drove another 100 miles and now everything works normal again??? but I am sure something will fail soon

First, hydraulic clutch systems are usually self-bleeding - it may not be the cylinders, but if one is failing, both will be at the same wear point, so replacing both master and slave is good preventive maintenance.

Second, problem may be the pilot shaft needle-bearing in the flywheel is binding up - you'll need to pull the trans, clutch housing, and clutch to replace that.
