I also like my 48re and would buy another , it sounds like you have more of a dealer problem than a truck problem . I have been seeing that all over and if Dodge doesn't do something about it they will be losing many costumers even with the great Cummins' . I have tore up a few of the Dodge standard transmissions and they cost a lot more than a auto's to fix . The 48Re is a good transmission and has held up very well for most people you obviously have a dealer working on yours who is a few bricks short of a full load . How do these places stay in business when they can not service what they sell is beyond me . Your truck may have built on a Friday but the transmission build date would be different since they are built some were else . I have worked in automotive assembly may years and Friday garbage is over rated along with Monday the days to avoid more would be the ones before and after a holiday the garbage tends to roll more then . Quality goes right out the window when everybody's mind is on a vacation or just time off . On the same note I had a Ford Bronco II that went through four auto's on me so I went standard for many years because of it and we switched to Dodge so I feel your pain . I have never fully recovered from the Ford and hope I never need to own another one , I hope you have better luck .
I haven't had a REALLY GOOD auto since the C6s, TH400s and TF 747s - and I've had all of those. No OD auto I've had was worth the powder it would take to overheat it - and that isn't much! I feel your pain and that's why there won't be any more autos in my TVs - at least until Detroit gets their Edit for language together. Craig
i had a auto in my 96 dodge and it was a 360 v8 and i was on my second auto tranny and i only pull a three horse slant alum trailer so when it was time to step up to a diesel i did not look back at buying the 6spd no slush boxes any more there too expensive to fix or build right
yeah last month in my 01 I was left stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere for 2 hours in 100 plus degree temps with my family all because of a bad governor pressure sensor and solenoid. I hate autos also, if you want worry free towing then buy a 6 speed. All this bad mouthing about the G56 being to low geared is BS, I'm not buying a truck to get good gas mileage I'm buying it to tow my junk with out problems. Mileage is just a bonus.
I will never own a diesel with a auto again
6 speed for the win!!!!

We may be sloooooow, but we get there eventually.

Tranny (not truck) could be a lemon, but I'd suspect the dealer's competence first... what 48REs lack in driveability & manners, they make up for with dependability & ruggedness... in other words, they might shift like crap, but they hardly ever leave ya on the side of the road.
6 Speed
I've got an 06 with a 6 speed and 3.73 rear ratio. I LOVE the trans but the truck is geared way too deep. The overdrive should have been higher but I only tow occasionally and only 4,000lbs max. This truck would be perfect with a 3.55 axle. I've got the 11 1/2 rear and have heard that they don't make any other ratios except 4.11. I'm going to go to a Cooper tire that is a 315/65/17 which will lower my 6th gear RPM by around 400 at 70 mph. Any thoughts?

True, they don't offer any other gearing options at this time for your rear.
I'm right there with ya, I've rebuilt enough auto's in my life to know I don't want one in something I need for dependable
transportation. In my wifes car it's OK, at least I can pull her home need be.Last auto I had got me stuck 600miles from home with my fifthwheel and a truck full of kids, could you imagine that day.
