Has anyone ever been around when the service writers are making up a bill for service and parts and seen the differences in cost?? I had to have a water pump put on the truck today and I managed to see what the differences in costs were for me the consumer after they had finished and before I combatively convinced them to check if a water pump is a warranty item. Price they were gonna charge me for a water pump..$208.80, after quoting me a different price on the phone. Price they billed to DC $167.00. Plus my $100 deductible. Coolant was $38.?? for me and a few dollars cheaper for DC. It also looked like he cut the labor in half. Do they make aftermarket pumps for my truck yet?? Has anyone ever bought one and what was the cost? The difference in what you and I are charged and what the pump actually cost seems a bit outlandish doesn't it? Who needs to sell new vehicles..all you need to make money in the dealership industry is a service dept.

 

Our service dept's are a major contributing factor to the popularity of Hondas and Toyotas.
Recently had transmission--front and rear differentials and transfer fluids changed by Chrysler dealer--made fun of a 500 dollar bill !!!!!!!!

 

Its really gotten ridiculous hasn't it? Especially when you consider that most of the crap parts they put on these trucks were manufactured in some third world country for pennies on the dollar.

 

Should I have even been charged a deductible on this repair? Ohh yeah now the tranny is acting up again. I think its a loose wire that the same dealership replaced in August Why does this always happen when I'm all psyched up and ready for a big trip??

 

If under 5 years and 100k the pump is covered under the ENGINE warranty with no deductable.Ice tea is about a $1.75 and I now drink water out.You should see the OVERHEAD to run a DEALER service dept. or parts dept.Just ask a well run and STOCKED(rare)indepentent what it costs him to open the doors daily.

 

$208 for a water pump with labor. That is cheap..... Get a foreign job and see how much that bill will be. I did several in the $300 to $500 range.
$208 for just the water pump. That's high. Should of been under the engine warranty though.

 

$208 was for the part only! I am just thinking in terms of what a water pump for any other vehicle costs. Two or three years ago I changed the water pump on my chevy and if I remember correctly it only cost eighty something dollars. Obviously inflation would make that same part closer to $90-100 range but that pump was bigger than the one off of my dodge. It just seems high to me. Don't get me wrong, I know that they have to make a profit and that it costs a fortune to pay all the people that work at a dealership, but it just seems like overkill to me. I'm sorry to rant it just kills me to have to pay for things im not supposed to and even worse to feel like I am getting screwed out of my hard earned money.

 

I know how you feel but you have to realize it is a $10,000 to $15,000 dollar motor. Pumps look very simple and also it is not a $2000 dollar V8. Nothing wrong with haggling about the price though. I would. Would ask for my good boy discount as usual.

There's the reason it get to me.

 

A new pump for my 05 at Advance is $64. There's not much to it, but there appears to be a lot of other stuff in the way. Did the pump on my 91 and it was pretty simple. About a 20 minute job once you figure out what needs to be done.
The rest of the story on these water pump jobs is that it's a good idea to replace the belt and tensioner while you're in there. It adds quite a bit of extra money to the cost of the project, but these tensioners don't seem to last as long as you might think.
