Parts found in transmission pan

Changed out pressure solenoid and transducer due to 1-2 shift hunting.
Found small part of this metal ring stuck to pan magnet and pulled larger piece out from inside the housing.

Any clues as to what this is? Seems to have been in there a while as the larger piece had scored the pan from rubbing over time.

Other than the 1-2 hunt I've seen no odd behavior. That's a quarter by it for scale.

Pulled the remainder out right under the forward clutch housing and I'm thinking it's the snap ring from the same. Shouldn't I be seeing major gear slippage though? Just trying to pin it down.

Yeap, it is part of a snap ring for the OD clutch Hub assembly as far as what I can remember. It's been posted on here before. Do a search.

I thought the OD hub was at the back end of the tranny, how the heck did that thing migrate and end up sticking out here?!

Not being smart, just thought it was much tighter in the housing.

Not sure. Do a search. That's where folks say they come from. Several folks have reported the issue.

dealer is cheapest!

After quotes from private mechanics ranging from $2600 to $3800 I got up the courage to call Dodge.

She asked if I had a single or double clutch in my 48RE... I had no idea so we went with the double, assuming it's the more expensive one.

Anyhoo.........

labor $800 to $1000
overhaul kit $136 + tax
master rebuild kit $320 + tax

I'd appreciate thoughts from the experts. I do not tow. I'm Googling the 2 kits to see the difference.

Truck drives fine, how do you all anticipate this failing as I'm missing half the C-clip on the OH hub, big bang or slow whining death. I ask as I have to take the girls out to Granny's soon, a 4 hr drive.

Thanks...and thank you Spooler, you were correct and all 4 mechanics said the OD clip is very susceptible to breakage.

I think you'll find the general consensus on here is to spring for the Suncoast, ATS or Goerend parts and build it right, since labor is the same.

Opted to just pull the back end of the tranny and replace the c-clip as otherwise all runs smoothly.

I had the same piece in my pan before my rebuild. Apparently you will lose OD and reverse when the rest of the ring fell out. No idea how long mine had been out but it lasted a while longer. I rebuilt it just to be safe. Went with Goerend parts and a local shop. It was shifting fine the whole time. I just didn't want to get stranded. I heard you could rebuild the OD assembly but it requires special tools.

Smile Thanks!

Thanks Duke, good to know how it may go down.
Hoping to get it fixed this week.
