paid my stupid fee today...
I did the same thing last year, don't feel too bad...73k on this diesel and dad has always had one...never EVER put gas in either. Til i stayed up all night moving. Filled up truck to make one last trip...as I returned the fuel nozzle to the pump I saw it was 91 octane (which I use in the car and bikes). I had just put in 30 gallons of gasoline...almost threw up. Rolled the truck away from the pump into a parking spot. Got a ride to Ace Hardware, bought a $15 transfer pump and two 5 gallon gas cans. Called everyone I knew in town to come by and get free gas. Pumped out as much as I could, fired it up for 5 seconds to get it back to the pump, began to fill it with diesel and some 2 stroke oil and heard a funny noise...I hadn't hooked the tank filler back up to the tank and was pumping diesel onto the ground.
At any rate it's been a year since with no problems. Sorry to hear it was so expensive tho.

My mom drove her 06 to WAWA and filled up with 87 at the time WAWA didn't even sell #2. She drove until the truck shut off. Friends at the dealer didn't F us like the other guy. They flushed and drained everything fired her up and all was well. That has been 3years and 10's of thousands of miles ago. Truck still runs perfectly.
Thanks for all the replies and help. I do appreciate your taking the time to help even if I failed to heed the advice. Truck does seem to be okay now. I guess long term is long term and we will see. I plan on running it until one of us, me or the truck, can not go anymore. I does make me feel better to know that these engines have survived this type of mistreatment. I did notice in the local paper that the owner of that Dodge dealership is buying his third local car dealership, a ford dealership, now. I should get a free tour, probably.
No charge for mine because the vent cap was still on. It's on to keep railway debris out of the tank and is suppose to be removed by the selling dealer. It wasn't and had started sucking the corners of the tank in!!Got anew tank, five gallons of diesel and a newe liftpump out of the deal.
This was on my '98.5.
For what it's worth, I had this same issue this past weekend. Wife had the truck out of town and proceeded to fill it with gasoline. About 28 gallons worth. With the advice in this and other threads, I manually pumped out as much as I could, which seemed to also be about 28 gallons, filled it with 20 gallons of fresh diesel, about a cup or 2 of howe's... drained the filter canister, changed my after-market fuel filter on the frame that I installed, drained the water separator... Once done, I commenced the starting, once it finally got fuel back in the rail, it coughed and sputtered for about 10-15 seconds and then settled down.. Drove it home after I topped the tank off full, and not a single issue.. runs great!
